Mustangs Eliminated in Big West Championship Semifinal on Penalties
11/10/2024 7:04:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior defender Nico Baltazar's (above) 26th-minute strike provided the top-seeded Cal Poly men's soccer program the initial lead Sunday afternoon against No. 4 UC Davis in the Big West Championship semifinals, but the Mustangs – after drawing 1-1 in regulation and through two extra-time periods – were eliminated by the Aggies on penalties, 5-4.
Junior Nicky McCune – the Big West Goalkeeper of the Year honoree – recorded five saves for Big West regular season champion Cal Poly, which saw itself tied on penalties with UC Davis, 4-4, after the initial five rounds. However, Aggies midfielder Zack Lillington converted his side's sixth attempt while Cal Poly junior forward Conner Lisenbee had his spot kick saved by UC Davis goalkeeper Mekhai Wilson.
Cal Poly, which captured the program's first Big West regular season title on the final day of the regular season, finished 2024 undefeated at Mustang Memorial Field (5-0-3) while setting new program records for fewest opponent goals conceded (13) and fewest goals allowed per game (0.68).
The Aggies, meanwhile, advanced to face second-seeded UC Santa Barbara in the Friday, Nov. 15 Big West Championship final.
"First off, we want to congratulate UC Davis and wish them all the best in the final," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "Also, as a program, we want to thank all our senior players who have had an incredible impact on our program and have left the jersey in a better place. We'll miss them and we look forward to celebrating their successes in the future."
Cal Poly scored Sunday with its first attempt of the match as a corner from junior midfielder Bakuena Ramakatsa landed for Big West Freshman of the Year selection Quinn Mahoney, who found Baltazar with the defender firing past UC Davis starting goalkeeper Noah Schwengeler for his second strike of 2024.
The Mustangs, however, were outshot 14-1 to begin the match and the Aggies found the equalizer on 53 minutes as midfielder Lucas Fernandez-Kim picked out Zachary Neuls – also from a corner – and the latter headed past McCune.
"I think we started the game well and once we went ahead, I felt we took our foot of the gas a little and allowed UC Davis to get more of a foothold in the game," Kennedy added. "These are things that we'll learn from in the future. As much as [the result] hurts right now, we know that we'll be stronger from our experiences this season."
Cal Poly forced Wilson into one second half save before Lisenbee was turned away during the first extra time period and once more in the second. Cal Poly's final opportunity to capture the match prior to penalties occurred in the 106th minute, but sophomore Parker Owens – the Big West Defender of the Year honoree – saw his shot cleared off the goal line.
