Mustangs Come Up Short in Coach Crozier's Final Match
11/1/2024 1:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
LA JOLLA, Calif. — In head coach Alex Crozier's final match, the Cal Poly women's soccer team fought tooth and nail to end the 2024 season on a high note, but the Mustangs came up just short Thursday night at Triton Soccer Stadium, falling 2-0 to UC San Diego.
Coach Crozier, who will now retire after spending the last 33 years as the program's only head coach, finishes his career with a 325-234-70 overall record and a 129-72-31 mark in Big West play. He is the winningest head coach in Big West history, both in conference play and overall. He led the Mustangs to 10 regular season conference championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances. The record six-time Big West Coach of the Year has mentored 140 All-Big West honorees and 41 All-West Region honorees.
On Thursday, Cal Poly outshot the Tritons (3-12-4, 1-6-3 Big West) 20-13, firing 14 of them on frame. The match was tightly played throughout and the Mustangs did everything they could to send coach Crozier out with a victory, but just couldn't break through.
In the first half, graduate student Whitney Wiley, seniors McKenna Carbon and Kate Reedy, and sophomore Annika Smith all registered shots on goal.
UC San Diego broke the scoreless deadlock in the 61st minute on a goal that was scored just moments after a dangerous opportunity by the Mustangs. The Tritons doubled their lead in the 66th minute and Cal Poly ratcheted up the intensity offensively in hopes of finding a goal.
In the 78th minute, junior Jessie Halladay earned arguably Cal Poly's best scoring chance of the night following a turnover by the Tritons in their own end. Smith deflected an attempted clearance by a UC San Diego defender and the ball fell to Halladay in the box, who ripped a shot toward the top of the net that was pushed over the crossbar by the Triton goalkeeper.
The Mustangs never gave up, but it just wasn't their night. The team recorded 10 shots across the final 24 minutes of action.
Halladay finished with a game-high five shots, while Carbon and Smith both registered three shots on goal, a team and game high.
With her 63rd consecutive start Thursday, senior center Emma Brown moved into a tie with Wendy Jones (1992-95) for the fourth most career starts in program history (76). She also made her 79th career appearance, moving into a tie with a handful of other players for eighth on Cal Poly's all-time list. The 2023 Big West Defender of the Year finishes her career with over 6,735 minutes on the pitch without receiving a card, playing every minute in 67 matches.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel secured five saves Thursday to finish with 208 career saves, sixth-most in program history. The 2022 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year and three-time All-Big West selection finishes her Cal Poly career with 19 shutouts, third most all-time, and 61 appearances and 60 starts, which both rank fourth all-time among Mustang goalkeepers.
Cal Poly finishes the year with a 5-11-3 overall record and 3-6-1 mark in conference play. In the final Big West regular season standings, the Mustangs were slotted in ninth place with 10 points. The Mustangs are set to lose 12 incredible seniors, including 11 who were apart of two Big West regular season championship teams, but will return plenty of firepower and talent next season in hopes of making another deep conference tournament run.
