FAIRFAX – Senior Baron Szeto fired a new Cal Poly single-round record of 63 to open California's Alistair Mackenzie Invitational at the par-71, 6,734-yard Meadow Club as the Mustang men's golf program sits in sixth after the opening two of three rounds.
Szeto, the reigning Big West Golfer of the Month honoree, produced 10 birdies during Monday's opening round against two bogeys for his 63. Recording birdies on his final three holes, Szeto bettered three previous 64s in Cal Poly program history with Jordan Wright the last Mustang to accomplish the score on Sept. 16, 2013 at Colorado State's Ram Masters Invitational.
Szeto followed with an afternoon 67 that comprised seven further birdies. With a two-round, 12-under 130, Szeto sits just a shot behind San Jose State's co-leading pair of Zubair Firdaus and Keshav Mungali.
Szeto's two-round 130 also set a new program record, bettering Chris Kirk's 131 at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on April 2, 2007.
Both Cal Poly senior Parker Mapes and sophomore Reese Sato followed opening-round 67s with afternoon 69s for two-round totals of six-under 136s. Mapes and Sato will open Tuesday's third and final round in 22nd place.
Mustang sophomore Leo Metzger shot an opening-round 73 before eagling the par-five, 506-yard 15th hole during the second round and adding four birdies for an afternoon 68. Metzger sits 54th with a three-under 141.
Following an opening-round 75, senior Jackson Parrish shot a second-round 68 comprised of six birdies for a two-round, one-over 143. Parrish shares 67th with Mustang sophomore Louis Pilod, whose even-par 71 during round No. 1 included three birdies before a second-round 72.
As a program Cal Poly is tied for sixth alongside Santa Clara with a 22-under 546.
Final round play at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational begins Tuesday morning.
