Mustangs Suffer First Big West Loss After Overtime Thriller with UCSB Saturday

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Three Mustangs had double digit scoring nights, but Cal Poly women's basketball came up just short against rival UC Santa Barbara Saturday, falling by one point to the Gauchos in an overtime thriller, 65-64 to suffer their first loss of Big West play.
With the Mustangs (7-7, 3-1 BW) leading 64-62 with 1:10 left in overtime, UCSB's Alexis Whitfield knocked down a midrange jumper to tie it at 64. Still tied at 64 with 24 seconds left, the Gauchos (9-5, 3-1 BW) milked the clock before Whitfield got fouled on her shot attempt to get to the free throw line where she made one of two to put UBSB by one with 1.5 seconds left. Cal Poly got one more chance to win it but were unable to get a shot off before time expired.
Junior guard Sydney Bourland led the Mustangs with a career-high 15 points in addition to five assists and five rebounds. Freshman Mary Carter also had a career scoring night, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. Junior guard Annika Shah added 12 points to mark her eighth double figure scoring game this season for Cal Poly, who got opened the game with a 12-5 lead.
Bourland scored nine of her 15 points in the first quarter to help the Mustangs lead it 21-17 heading into the second quarter. The Gauchos began the second on a 9-0 run to take a 26-21 lead. The Mustangs responded with five straight points to tie it at 26 before UCSB took a 37-35 lead into halftime.
Cal Poly was able to get it back tied after the third quarter and took its first lead of the fourth with seven minutes left to play in the game. The Mustangs led it 56-53 with four minutes left but were held scoreless the remainder of regulation. UCSB was held without a field goal during that stretch but made three straight free throws to tie it at 56 and send it to overtime.
The Mustangs will return to Mott Athletics Center next Thursday, Jan. 11 to take on UC Riverside at 6 p.m.
