SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Freshman forward Mary Carter scored a season-high 18 points but the Cal Poly women's basketball team, plagued by 26 turnovers, fell at home to UC Riverside Thursday evening, 64-53.
Carter knocked down four threes and was 6-14 overall from the field off the bench. Redshirt freshman Sierra Lichtie added nine points and seven rebounds for the Mustangs (7-8, 3-2 BW).
The Highlanders (7-8, 2-3 BW) had three players score in double figures led by the Big West's leading scorer Jordan Webster, who finished with a game high 21 points. UC Riverside turned the 26 turnovers they forced into 28 points. They also were very efficient at getting and making free throws, going 23-28 from the charity stripe.
After going up by four after the first quarter, the Highlanders finished the second quarter on a 9-0 run to stretch their lead to 13 at halftime.
Cal Poly's defense tightened in the second half, holding UC Riverside without a field goal for the final 14 minutes of the game. After going down as much as 20 with seven minutes left in the third, the Mustangs slowly chipped away at the UC Riverside lead. They got as close as within nine with 2:30 left in the game but were unable to draw any closer.
Cal Poly will look to bounce back on the road Saturday when they head down to face UC San Diego at 2 p.m. The game will be aired on ESPN+.
