Mustangs Take Down Long Beach State, Improve to 3-0 in Big West
1/4/2024 10:31:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LONG BEACH, Calif. — Cal Poly women's basketball kept things rolling on the road Thursday night, taking down Long Beach State 64-56 behind 18 points apiece from both junior guard Annika Shah and senior forward Natalia Ackerman.
With the win, the Mustangs (7-6, 3-0 BW) have now won four straight and are off to a 3-0 start to Big West play for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Ackerman was an efficient 8-11 shooting from the field while Shah was 6-15 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Redshirt freshman forward Sierra Lichtie and junior guard Sidney Richards both added eight points apiece.
It was Cal Poly's tough defense that helped lead them to victory as they held Long Beach State (6-6, 1-2 BW) to 36 percent shooting overall, including 26 percent from three as well as 25 turnovers. The Mustangs turned those turnovers into 17 points.
Cal Poly found itself trailing by two heading into the second quarter before starting the second on a 5-0 run to go up by three. Tied at 21 with four minutes left before halftime, the Mustangs finished the half on a 9-2 run to lead it 29-23 at the break.
Long Beach State scored the first 10 points of the second half to take the lead back 33-29 with seven minutes left in the third. Cal Poly's suffocating defense held the Beach to just three points the remainder of the quarter as the Mustangs took a 39-36 lead into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth offensive output as the teams combined for 45 points in the quarter. With the Mustangs holding on to a 44-43 lead, Cal Poly went on an 8-3 run to go up 52-46 with three minutes left.
Long Beach State got within four at 52-48 but Cal Poly then scored six straight points to go up by 10 and pull away for good.
The Mustangs will stay on the road Saturday to face Blue/Green rival UCSB, who is 2-1 in Big West play. Tip time is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
