CORVALLIS, Ore. — Trevor Tinker pinned a top-15 nationally ranked opponent at heavyweight and three other Mustangs secured victories, but Cal Poly wrestling came up short in its Pac-12 opener at No. 16 Oregon State on Friday night.
The 25th-ranked Mustangs (4-2, 0-1 Pac-12) led 11-7 at the dual's intermission, however the Beavers (5-2, 2-0 Pac-12) won four of the final five bouts to earn a 21-17 dual victory.
Cal Poly jumped in front of Oregon State halfway through Friday's dual thanks to victories at 133, 149 and 157 pounds. No. 9 Zeth Romney, the reigning Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week, secured the Mustangs' first win of the dual, defeating No. 26 Gabe Whisenhunt by a 7-2 decision at 133.
Wrestling in front of their hometown crowd, Chance Lamer and Legend Lamer — Corvallis natives — both emerged victorious in their bouts. Chance, ranked No. 5 in the country at 149 pounds, dismantled No. 15 Nash Singleton, earning a 13-3 major decision thanks to four takedowns. The redshirt sophomore improved to 6-0 in duals and 12-1 overall this season. His win leveled the dual at 7-7.
With his match knotted at 1-1 entering the final period, Legend, ranked No. 31 at 157 pounds, secured an escape, takedown, 4-point near fall and a riding time point to roll to a 10-1 major decision over Oregon State's Isaiah Crosby.
Then the Beavers won two matches by major decision and one by decision to take a 18-11 advantage over the Mustangs.
At 197 pounds, Jarad Priest went to toe-to-toe with No. 28 Justin Rademacher and nearly scored the upset, but fell short in the first overtime period 4-1. The win allowed Oregon State to clinch the dual.
Tinker stepped on the mat for the final bout of the night at 285 pounds and looked determined to help the Mustangs end the dual on a high note, and he delivered. Tinker, ranked No. 24, grabbed a takedown in the second period and then caught No. 11 Boone McDermott, a 2023 NCAA qualifier, sleeping, pinning him at the 4:48 mark of the match. He improved to 6-2 on the season.
Despite coming up short in their matches, No. 32 Dom Mendez (125), Abe Hinrichsen (141), Daschle Lamer (174) and Kendall La Rosa (184) all fought to the bitter end against ranked opponents. Daschle, a freshman from Corvallis, suffered the first dual defeat of his collegiate career (3-1), falling to Matthew Olguin, the 13th-ranked 165-pounder in the country.
