SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The road to a second straight Pac-12 dual meet title for the Cal Poly wrestling program begins this week as the Mustangs head to Corvallis on Friday for a battle with Oregon State and host Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday.
Coming off a perfect 3-0 week at home, No. 25 Cal Poly (4-1) opens its five-dual Pac-12 schedule 6 p.m. Friday at No. 16 Oregon State (4-2). The team's first road dual of the season will be available to watch on Pac-12.com on the Oregon State Live Stream.
The Mustangs cap the weekend by hosting CSU Bakersfield (0-6) at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mott Athletics Center. The dual will be streamed live on the Cal Poly Wrestling X/Twitter account (@CalPolyWrestle) and simultaneously on FloWrestling.
After an impressive week at Mott, Cal Poly climbed to No. 25 in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, marking the first time this season the team has been ranked in the poll. In addition, the Mustangs also checked in at No. 22 in the latest Open Mat Team Tournament rankings.
The Mustangs will carry six ranked wrestlers into their duals with the Beavers and Roadrunners, including three ranked in the top 10 in their respective weight classes. Redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer leads the way at No. 5 at 149 pounds. The 2023 NCAA Round of 12 qualifier is still undefeated in duals this season (5-0).
Redshirt freshman Zeth Romney is ranked No. 9 nationally at 133 pounds, graduate student Adam Kemp No. 10 at 174, redshirt sophomore Trevor Tinker No. 24 at 285, redshirt junior Legend Lamer No. 31 at 157 and redshirt freshman Dom Mendez No. 32 at 125.
Romney is fresh off winning Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week for the second time in just three weeks. The Simi Valley, Calif. native is the first Mustang in program history to earn the award multiple times. Romney went undefeated across the three home duals and had a spectacular 24-second pin in the matchup with American University — tied for the 11th quickest fall in Cal Poly dual meet history.
Friday's dual at Oregon State will be a homecoming for the Lamer brothers, who all grew up in Corvallis and attended Crescent Valley High. All three Lamer brothers currently on the team are projected to be in the lineup for the showdown with the Beavers — Chance, Daschle and Legend. The oldest Lamer brother, Brawley, currently serves as the Director of Operations for the Mustangs.
This past week, Cal Poly's three home duals marked the first time Legend, Chance and Daschle have all wrestled together in the same lineup together, with the trio posting a combined record of 8-1 across the duals.
Eight of the 10 wrestlers in Oregon State's lineup are ranked, with five ranked inside the top 15 in their weight classes. Two-time Pac-12 champion and four-time NCAA qualifier Trey Munoz leads the way as the fourth-ranked 184-pounder in the country.
Last year, the Mustangs took down Oregon State 19-15 at Mott Athletics Center to earn their first win over the Bears since 2011 and finish off a perfect 5-0 season in conference to capture their first Pac-12 dual meet title in program history. Tinker clinched the victory for Cal Poly with an 8-2 decision at heavyweight.
Oregon State opened its Pac-12 slate in Bakersfield on Dec. 15, blanking the Roadrunners 48-0. The Beavers most recently suffered a 36-3 home defeat to No. 1 Penn State on Jan. 5.
CSU Bakersfield lost 43-0 at home to No. 24 Arizona State on Jan. 7 to fall to 0-2 in Pac-12 duals this season. In addition to their conference defeats, the Roadrunners have also lost to Wyoming, Central Michigan, American and Campbell. Last year, Cal Poly topped CSUB 22-12 on the road. The Mustangs have emerged victorious in their last two meetings with the Roadrunners.
Following Friday's and Sunday's duals, Cal Poly takes a brief break in action before traveling to Arkansas on Saturday, Feb. 3, for a dual with Pac-12 foe Little Rock.
