SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After closing out 2023 with an historic showing at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, the Cal Poly wrestling program returns home this week for the first time in over two months to host duals against American, Northern Colorado and Air Force at the Mott Athletics Center.
It all starts Friday with a doubleheader of duals. First up, the Mustangs will battle American University at 5:30 p.m., then the team caps the night against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. Cal Poly concludes the weekend of duals at 1 p.m. Sunday against Air Force.
All three duals will be streamed live on the Cal Poly Wrestling X/Twitter account (@CalPolyWrestle) and simultaneously on FloWrestling.
Cal Poly, who is tied for 27th in the InterMat Tournament national rankings, carries six nationally ranked wrestlers into this week's duals, including three ranked inside the top 15 in their respective weight classes. Chance Lamer leads the way, checking in at No. 6 at 149 pounds. Zeth Romney is ranked No. 13 at 133 pounds, Adam Kemp No. 13 at 174 pounds, Trevor Tinker No. 24 at 285 pounds, Legend Lamer No. 29 at 157 pounds and Dom Mendez No. 29 at 125 pounds.
Last time out, the Mustangs shined at the prestigious Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30 as three wrestlers placed in their weight classes — a program record at the tournament. Romney, a redshirt freshman, led the charge securing a third-place finish at 133 pounds, the second highest individual finish ever by a Mustang at Midlands. As a team, Cal Poly, who received 12 votes in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, captured 13th out of 42 schools, the second highest team finish in program history at the event.
This week's duals mark the Mustangs' first action at home since opening their 75th year as a program on Nov. 3 with duals against Duke and Rutgers.
Cal Poly's dual with American on Friday will mark the first meeting between the two schools since 2012 and the third all-time with the series knotted at 1-1. The Eagles are 4-5 in duals this season and most recently suffered a 28-12 defeat at No. 29 Michigan State last Friday. American has one ranked wrestler — No. 16 125-pounder Jack Maida.
Last year at Northern Colorado, the Mustangs fell 25-9 to the Bears. Cal Poly is 2-7 all-time against Northern Colorado and last took down the Bears in 2017. Northern Colorado, who received four votes in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, is 7-1 in duals this season, suffering its lone defeat at No. 20 West Virginia on Dec. 10, 31-9. The Bears, tied No. 16 in the FloWrestling Team Tournament rankings, have three nationally ranked wrestlers.
Air Force, ranked No. 15 in the FloWrestling Team Tournament rankings, will travel to Wyoming on Friday before squaring off against the Mustangs on Sunday. The Falcons are 2-2 in duals, falling to No. 20 West Virginia and No. 2 Missouri. Cal Poly will be looking to avenge last year's 22-12 loss at the Air Force Academy. The Falcons currently have four nationally ranked wrestlers, including Wyatt Hendrickson (12-0) who is ranked No. 2 at 285 pounds.
Following the three home duals, Cal Poly heads to Oregon State on Friday, Jan. 19, to open its Pac-12 dual slate.
