SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling program put on a show Friday night in front of the Mustang faithful, taking down American University and Northern Colorado in a pair of duals at the Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs opened the night with a dominant win over the Eagles, soaring to a 39-3 triumph. The team capped the doubleheader with a thrilling come from behind 23-15 victory over Northern Colorado, ranked No. 14 in the latest Open Mat Team Tournament rankings.
Cal Poly, who received 12 votes in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll and is tied for 27th in the InterMat Tournament rankings, took care of business against American, winning nine of the 10 bouts. Redshirt freshman Dom Mendez got things started with a commanding performance. The 29th-ranked 125-pounder secured a 14-2 major decision.
Fellow redshirt freshman Zeth Romney, ranked No. 9 in the country at 133 pounds, helped raise the energy inside Mott even higher, pinning his opponent just 24 seconds into their match — tied for the 11th quickest fall in Cal Poly dual meet history.
The Mustangs lost at 141 pounds, but won the next seven bouts to cruise to victory. Legend Lamer (157) secured a fall (1:59), Chance Lamer (149) and Trevor Tinker (285) each earned technical falls, Jarad Priest (197) grabbed a 17-5 major decision, and Michael Goldfeder (165), Daschle Lamer (174) and Kendall La Rosa (184) each won by decision.
In the dual with the Bears, the Mustangs rose to the challenge and delivered an incredible comeback victory. With Cal Poly trailing 15-8 with four bouts remaining, freshman Daschle Lamer sparked a comeback, flipping his opponent and the dual on its head with a fall at 1:34. The triumph at 174 pounds pulled the Mustangs within 1 point of Northern Colorado, who received four votes in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll.
Kendall La Rosa kept the momentum rolling with a 7-3 decision at 184 pounds to propel Cal Poly in front of the Bears 17-15 — a lead they would not relinquish. Jarad Priest won a nail-biter at 197 pounds by a 2-1 decision and Trevor Tinker earned an 8-2 decision at heavyweight to secure the Mustangs' first dual victory over Northern Colorado in seven years.
Romney snagged a thrilling 4-1 sudden victory in the first overtime period over 19th-ranked 133-pounder Dominick Serrano in the dual as well, and Chance Lamer picked up his second technical fall of the night with a 22-7 victory.
Romney, Chance Lamer, Daschle Lamer, La Rosa, Priest and Tinker all went a perfect 2-0 on the night. Chance, ranked No. 6 in the country in his weight class, improved to 10-1 on the season and earned 11 takedowns across his two matches, giving him a total of 22 across four duals this season. Tinker, a 2023 NCAA qualifier who is ranked No. 24 in the nation, impressed in his first dual action of the season and Daschle shined in his first collegiate dual.
Romney, the Jan. 3 Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week, improved to 14-5 this season and 3-1 in duals.
