HARRISONBURG, Va. — Outside hitter Tommi Stockham and setter Emme Bullis each recorded double-doubles for Cal Poly, but the Mustangs fell to New Hampshire 3-1 (25-17, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23) in their first match of the Dukes Invitational Friday morning.
Stockham finished with a match-leading 11 kills in addition to a season-high 17 digs. Bullis notched her first double-double of the year, dishing 21 assists to go along with 16 digs. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska added 10 kills, nine digs, and a career-high seven blocks for the Mustangs (4-3), who were held to a .109 hitting percentage by the Wildcats (6-2).
Redshirt junior libero Jolei Akima continued her strong back row defense play for Cal Poly, finishing with 21 digs, her fifth match already this season with at least 20 digs. The Mustangs also got contributions from freshman outside hitter Emma Fredrick and redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken, who each had nine kills.
In the first set, the only one that was decided by more than three points, New Hampshire got out to a 10-3 lead to start. Cal Poly scored four straight points to get back within three. However, that's as close as the Mustangs were able to get as the Wildcats went on to win the set 25-17.
Although the second set got off to the same start as the first, with New Hampshire taking a 10-3 lead, Cal Poly slowly built a comeback with an 11-4 run to eventually tie it at 14 apiece. After later getting down 23-21, the Mustangs rebounded again with a 3-1 run to tie it at 24-24. Tied at 25, a kill by Thalken followed by an ace from freshman setter Samantha Callahan sealed the set for the Mustangs, 27-25.
The third set was back-and-forth and tight throughout. Tied at 17, it swung after the Wildcats went on a 6-1 run to go up 23-17. The Mustangs battled back with four straight points to get within two. However, with New Hampshire leading 24-22, a kill by the Wildcats won them the set, 25-22.
New Hampshire scored the first four points of the fourth set before Cal Poly later got it back tied at 12 apiece. It was back-and-forth from there until, tied at 23-23, New Hampshire scored consecutive points to clinch a victory, 25-23.
Cal Poly will look to bounce back in its second match of the day Friday when facing host James Madison at 4 p.m. PT. The match will be aired live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
