Mustangs Fall on the Road at James Madison Friday

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Cal Poly volleyball redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham finished with double digit kills for the fourth straight match but the Mustangs, playing their second match of the day Friday, fell on the road at James Madison 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 27-25).
Stockham had a team-high 10 kills to go along with nine digs. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken had nine kills and four blocks while redshirt junior middle blocker Kate Slack added eight kills and four blocks for the Mustangs (4-4). Redshirt junior libero Jolei Akima once again led the team in digs, finishing with a match-high 19.
As a team, James Madison hit .270 compared to .204 for Cal Poly. The Dukes also outpaced in the Mustangs in blocks, digs, and service aces for the match.
The Dukes (5-2), who were in the 'others receiving votes' category of the AVCA Top 25 Poll this week, got out to a 10-3 lead to begin the first set. Cal Poly then scored five straight to cut the lead down to two. With JMU ahead 12-10, the Dukes went on a 5-1 run to go ahead by six, and later as much as seven at 22-15. The Mustangs made a late rally to get within four at 23-19 before JMU went on to win the set 25-21.
The second set was back-and-forth early. It swung in JMU's favor when tied 5-5, the Dukes went on an 8-2 run to go up 13-7. The Mustangs continued to battle back and eventually got back within three at 18-15. Trailing 21-17, Cal Poly rattled off three consecutive points to cut it to one at 21-20. However, with JMU leading 23-22, the Dukes scored back-to-back points to win the set 25-22.
The third set was close a close one throughout. Tied at 10, JMU went on a 5-2 run to take a three-point lead. Cal Poly then answered back with four straight points to take a 16-15 advantage. Tied at 18, the Dukes scored back-to-back points to take a 20-18 lead. A few points later with the Mustangs trailing 22-20, it was Cal Poly scoring consecutive points to tie it up at 22 apiece. Cal Poly later held set point at 25-24 before JMU scored the next three points to win it 27-25 and clinch the match victory.
Cal Poly will wrap up the Dukes Invitational Saturday with one match against VCU at 2 p.m. PT.
