SAN LUIS OBISPO – Returning seven players and the top two scorers from last year in U.S. Amateur qualifiers Jackson Parrish and Joey Zambri, the Cal Poly men's golf program opens the 2023-24 season at Air Force's Sept. 10-12 Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational.
The Mustangs, who closed last year with a third-place finish at the Big West Championship, play four fall tournaments, culminating with their own Oct. 30-31 Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve (Carmel Valley, Calif.). Six further spring tournaments follow before the Mustangs complete the regular season at the 2024 Big West Championship, returning once more to La Quinta Country Club.
Parrish led Cal Poly last season with a 73.1 scoring average, finishing with three top-10 finishes, 12 total rounds under par and four rounds in the 60s. Zambri, playing August's U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club (Parker, Colo.) alongside Parrish, averaged 73.9 strokes per round a year ago.
Also returning to the lineup for the Mustangs are graduate students Austin Liu (74.0 scoring average last year, nine rounds under par) and Ben Quick (74.4, two top 20- finishes) and juniors Baron Szeto (75.0, three rounds in the 60s), Drew Kim (75.2) and Parker Mapes (75.5).
Following this week's season-opening tournament, Cal Poly competes at the Sept. 18-19 USF-Howard Intercollegiate at San Francisco's Harding Park.
