Three Hit Double Figure Kills as Cal Poly Takes Down Cal State Fullerton

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Three Mustangs finished with double digit kills as Cal Poly volleyball used a balanced team attack to take down Cal State Fullerton at home Saturday 3-1 (25-13, 25-15, 24-26, 25-9).
Redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham led the way with 17 kills, seven digs, and a career-high four aces. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska was right behind her with 16 kills and 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the season while hitting a very efficient .412. Redshirt junior outside hitter Kate Slack notched 12 kills and a career-high nine blocks, as the Mustangs (9-7, 3-1 BW) had 12 blocks as a team on the afternoon.
Redshirt sophomore setter Emme Bullis had a solid all-around match, dishing out 42 assists while also collecting eight digs, a season-high three kills, and a season-high six blocks. In the back row, junior libero Jolei Akima led the team with 21 digs as Cal Poly out-dug the Titans (1-12, 0-4 BW) 64 to 44.
As a team, Cal Poly hit .398 for the match, its second-highest hitting percentage of the season so far. Meanwhile, they limited Cal State Fullerton to a .029 hitting percentage.
The Mustangs were dominant in each of the first two sets. In set one, Cal Poly hit a whopping .348 as they cruised to a 25-13 win.
Cal Poly was equally in control of the second set as they led the entire way after getting out to a 6-2 lead and went on to win it 25-15.
In the third, the Titans were able to erase a 22-15 deficit and come back to take the set 26-24 to force a fourth. However, in the fourth the Mustangs put their foot on the gas as they got out to a 12-4 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-9 to clinch the victory.
The Mustangs sit at 3-1 after two weeks of conference play, putting them in a four-way tie for second place in the Big West standings. The Mustangs will now hit the road for their next three matches, starting next week with road tests against 4-0 UC Davis Thursday, Oct. 5 followed by at UC Riverside Saturday, Oct. 7.
