Cal Poly Earns 3-1 Road Victory Over UC Davis Thursday

DAVIS, Calif. — Led by double digit kills from both Lizzy Markovska and Tommi Stockham, the Cal Poly volleyball team picked up its fourth win in a row Thursday after taking down UC Davis on the road, 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 27-25).
Markovska led the Mustangs, who improved to 4-1 to start Big West play, with 16 kills to go along with seven digs, three blocks, and two aces. Stockham recorded her eighth double-double of the season, finishing with 13 kills and 12 digs in addition to three aces.
Cal Poly dominated the battle from the service line as the Mustangs had 11 aces compared to just two by the Aggies (9-6, 4-1 BW). In addition, Cal Poly won the defensive battle at the net, recording 12 blocks to UC Davis' seven.
Following a tight first set in which the Aggies squeaked it out 25-23, the Mustangs rebounded in the second set. Despite starting out down 6-1, Cal Poly eventually came back to take a 17-14 lead after an 8-1 run. The Mustangs didn't look back from there, finishing the set on a 7-2 run to win it 25-18.
Cal Poly got out to a 5-2 lead to start the third. Up 12-11, a 5-1 run by the Mustangs gave them a 17-12 advantage. Cal Poly led 24-20 before the Aggies scored back-to-back points to cut it to 24-22. UC Davis then missed on its next serve to give the Mustangs the third set 25-22.
The Mustangs came out firing on all cylinders to begin the second set, taking a 10-4 lead to start. UC Davis responded with a 7-1 run to tie it at 11 apiece. Tied at 22 later on, the Aggies converted consecutive points to hold set point at 24-22. Cal Poly showed its resiliency by scoring the next three points to regain the lead 25-24. After the Aggies tied it at 25, back-to-back points by Stockham clinched the match for Cal Poly, 27-25.
The Mustangs will now head down south to take on UC Riverside Saturday at 4 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+
