Mustangs Finish Week With 3-0 Sweep Victory Over UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Backed by double digit kills from both Tommi Stockham and Lizzy Markovska, the Cal Poly volleyball team went into SRC Arena and swept UC Riverside 3-0 Saturday (25-9, 25-16, 26-24) to improve to 5-1 in Big West play.
Stockham recorded her ninth double-double of the season, leading the team with 14 kills and 13 digs. Markovska added 12 kills, nine digs, and three aces for the Mustangs (11-7, 5-1 BW) who have now won five straight matches.
Cal Poly was dominant in the first set, hitting .524 for the set and got out to an 8-3 lead to start. Already leading 12-6, the Mustangs completely pulled away from the Highlanders (4-14, 3-3 BW) in the set after going on a 10-2 run to go up 22-8 before going on to win it 25-9.
The Mustangs charged out to a 14-5 lead in the second set. From there, UC Riverside never got closer than within six as Cal Poly used a 7-1 to extend the lead to 12 and go on to take the set 25-16.
Things got much tighter in the third set with a total of 11 tied and seven lead changes. Tied at 6, the Mustangs scored six unanswered points to take a 12-6 lead. The Highlanders responded with a 9-3 run to eventually tie it up at 15 apiece. After going back-and-forth, the set was tied 24-24, a ball handling error by UCR followed by a block from Annabelle Thalken and Tess Masingale won the set and the match for the Mustangs, 26-24.
Cal Poly will put its five-match win streak to the test next week against two of the top teams in the Big West. The Mustangs will travel south to face Blue-Green rival UCSB Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. UCSB is 6-0 so far in Big West play and atop the conference standings.
That will be followed by the always anticipated home match with Hawai'i on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
