Mustangs Fall on the Road to First Place UCSB Thursday

GOLETA, Calif. — Outside hitters Tommi Stockham and Lizzy Markovska both recorded double figure kills but Cal Poly fell on the road Thursday to first-place UCSB, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-20).
Stockham led the Mustangs (11-8, 5-2 BW) with 11 kills and seven digs. It is her seventh straight match with double digit kills. Markovska was right behind her with 10 kills for her sixth consecutive match at least 10 kills.
The Gauchos (17-2, 7-0 BW), who came into Thursday as the top hitting percentage team in the Big West, hit .340 for the match and had four players with at least seven kills. They were led by Tasia Farmer's 18.
UCSB got out to an 8-3 lead in the first set. Cal Poly came back with a 7-3 run to get back within one. However, the Gauchos pulled away after a 6-2 run to go up 17-12 and went on to win it 25-17.
The Gauchos scored the first seven points of the second set and held an 11-1 lead. The Mustang fought back after going down 13-3 with a 9-2 run to cut the UCSB lead down to 15-12. The Gauchos then went back up by six at 19-13 and never looked back, going on to win the set 25-19.
Tied 6-6 in the third set, UCSB went on a 12-3 run to take a 19-8 lead. Trailing 22-12, Cal Poly fought its way back to within four after scoring six straight points at 22-18. However, the Gauchos held off the Mustangs from there and went on to win the set 25-20.
Cal Poly, now in third place in the Big West standings, will now shift its focus to hosting second place Hawai'i on Saturday inside Mott Athletics Center at 7 p.m. It is a Blackout match with all fans in attendance encouraged to wear black.
