Cal Poly Falls to Hawai’i 3-1 in Front of Packed Mott Athletics Center

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Outside hitters Lizzy Markovska and Tommi Stockham both went for double digit kills once again as Cal Poly, in front of a nearly sold-out Mott Athletics Center, battled but ultimately came up short against Hawai'i Saturday, 3-1. (25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16).
Markovska had a team-high 15 kills while Stockham finished with 10 kills. Redshirt sophomore setter Emme Bullis recorded her second double-double of the season with 39 assists and 11 digs for the Mustangs (11-9, 5-3 BW), who had 11 blocks as a team.
The Rainbow Wahine (13-6, 6-2 BW) had three players with double figure kills, led by reigning Big West Player of the Year Amber Igiede with 16.
In the first set, Cal Poly kept it close with Hawai'i trailing by just three at 18-15 before the Rainbow Wahine scored three straight to go up by six and went on to win the set 25-18.
The Mustangs bounced back in the second set. Tied at five, Cal Poly went on a 5-1 run to go ahead by four. Hawai'i eventually got it back tied at 17 apiece before the Mustangs regained their four-point lead after a 5-1 run. The Rainbow Wahine got it back within one at 22-21, but Cal Poly wasn't fazed as they finished the set on a 3-1 run to win the set 25-22.
Cal Poly was neck and neck with Hawai'i throughout the third set. The Mustangs were down by just two at 23-21 before a Cal Poly service error followed by an Igiede kill won the set for the Rainbow Wahine 25-23.
In the fourth, it was back-and-forth until, tied at 14, Hawai'i finished the set on an 11-2 run to run away and win the set 25-16 to seal the match victory.
The Mustangs, now in a two-way tie for fourth in the Big West standings, will hit the road for its next match on Thursday, Oct. 19 before returning home to host CSU Bakersfield Saturday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m.
