10/19/2023 9:41:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska notched double digit kills for the 16th time this season and Cal Poly's defense was on full display as the Mustangs swept CSUN Thursday in Northridge 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-17).
Markovska led all players with 11 kills, hitting .231. She now has reached double figure kills in each of the last eight matches. Four other Mustangs (12-9, 6-3 BW) had at least five kills as redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham finished with seven kills, matched a career-high with four aces, and had 10 digs.
Cal Poly had its middle attack going all match long as redshirt junior middle blocker Kate Slack added six kills, hitting .333, and led the way at the net with seven blocks. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman middle blocker Tess Masingale had an error-free seven kills, hitting .583. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken chipped in five kills and a pair of blocks.
It was one of the Mustangs' best defensive efforts as a team as they held the Matadors (4-16, 2-7 BW) to a .084 hitting percentage, the third lowest percentage Cal Poly has held their opponents to this season.
Tied 11-11 in the first set, Cal Poly used a 6-2 run to go ahead 17-13 before CSUN scored four straight to tie it back up at 17 apiece. The Mustangs then put up five unanswered points to take a 22-17 lead. The Matadors got within two at 22-20 and then again at 24-22 before a Masingale kill sealed the set for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs were red hot in the second set, scoring the first eight points and taking a 14-2 lead. Cal Poly led by as much as 13 at 22-9 before CSUN came back with a 13-2 run to make it 24-22. However, a middle attack kill by Slack finished off the set for the Mustangs to win it.
In the third with Cal Poly ahead 10-9, the Mustangs went on a 7-2 run to go up 17-11. From there, CSUN never got closer than within four as Cal Poly cruised along to a 25-17 win in the third to clinch the sweep over the Matadors.
Now in sole possession of fourth place in the Big West standings, Cal Poly will look to continue its winning ways Saturday when hosting CSU Bakersfield at 2 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
