Mustangs Run Through Roadrunners 3-1 Saturday at Home

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Six Mustangs had at least five kills as the Cal Poly volleyball team used a total team effort to take down CSU Bakersfield 3-1 (25-15, 25-10, 22-25, 25-16) at home Saturday.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska led the Mustangs (13-9, 7-3 BW) with 11 kills and nine digs. Redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham did a little bit of everything, collecting nine kills, eight digs, four blocks, and tied a career-high with four service aces.
Redshirt freshman middle blocker Tess Masingale put down seven kills and had six blocks while redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken also added seven kills and three blocks for Cal Poly, who had 12 blocks as a team.
The Mustangs got off to a hot start to begin the first set as Stockham recorded four straight aces to begin the match. Cal Poly took an 11-4 lead and never looked back, going on to win the first set 25-15.
Cal Poly continued its dominance in the second set, going ahead by as much as 19-5 and cruising to a 25-10 victory.
The Roadrunners (6-16, 2-8 BW) bounced back with a 25-22 second set victory to push it to a fourth set. In the fourth, CSU Bakersfield scored the first five points of the set before the Mustangs were able to come back and eventually tie it 7-7. Later with Cal Poly ahead 16-14, the Mustangs put their foot on the gas as they finished the set on a 9-2 run to clinch the set 25-16 and the match.
Cal Poly hits the road next week for a pair of Big West matches starting at Cal State Fullerton Friday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. followed by UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m.
