Career Highs Set as Mustangs Earn Five Set Comeback Win Over Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. — Three Mustangs recorded double-doubles and several set season and career highs as Cal Poly volleyball came back to beat Cal State Fullerton on the road Friday night 3-2 (23-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-14, 15-6) to notch their third straight win.Tommi Stockham led the Mustangs (14-9, 8-3 BW) with a season-high 24 kills, hitting .400, in addition to 10 digs and tied a career high with four aces. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska finished with a career-high 18 kills, 11 digs and a career high six aces for Cal Poly, who as a team had 16 aces which is the most by a Cal Poly team since 2001.
Redshirt sophomore opposite Annabelle Thalken had a career night herself, finishing with 15 kills, hitting .379, as well as seven digs. Redshirt sophomore setter Emme Bullis recorded her fourth double-double of the season after dishing out a season high 50 assists and a team high 13 digs. Junior middle blocker Kate Slack had a very efficient nine kills on 13 swings, hitting .538 and led the team with four blocks.
As a team, the Mustangs hit .351 for the match, their second-highest percentage of the season. They also had season highs in kills (69) and assists (63) in the match, which marked the eighth time this season they have played a five-set match, moving to 6-2 this season in those matches.
After getting off to a slow start in the first set as the Titans (1-19, 0-11 BW) led by as much as 10 at 18-8, the Mustangs responded with a 15-5 run to tie things at 23 apiece. However, Cal State Fullerton scored two in a row to win the first 25-23.
Cal Poly responded in the second by getting out to an 11-3 lead. The Mustangs extended their lead to as much as 11 at 16-5 before cruising to a 25-14 victory to even the match at a set apiece.
Tied 5-5 in the third, the Titans scored six unanswered points to take an 11-5 lead. The Mustangs then slowly chipped away at that lead and were eventually able to get it tied up at 20. Tied at 21, Cal State Fullerton finished the set on a 4-1 run to win it 25-22.
Needing to win and force a fifth set, the Mustangs scored the first five points of the fourth set. They extended their lead to 7-1 and later 12-4 and never looked back, going on to win the set 25-14 and forced a decisive set.
Tied 4-4 in the race to 15 in the fifth, Cal Poly put up five straight points to take a 9-4 lead. Later ahead 11-6, the Mustangs put their foot on the gas as they scored four in a row to finish off the Titans 15-6 and clinch the match.
Cal Poly will now get ready to face UC Irvine, who handed UCSB its first conference loss of the season Friday night, Saturday at 4 p.m. inside Crawford Hall. You can watch the match live on ESPN+.
