The Anteaters eventually tied it back up at 16 apiece before three straight points by the Mustangs gave them the 19-16 lead which they never looked back from, going on to win the set 25-21. Things flipped in the third and fourth sets for UC Irvine as the Anteaters stormed out to big, early leads in each set that Cal Poly was unable to recover from. UC Irvine took the third set 25-12 and the fourth 25-9 to force a decisive fifth set. In the fifth, the Anteaters started out hot getting out to a 5-1 lead and later led 9-4. The teams went back-and-forth from there until, tied at 14, a Thalken kill followed by a UC Irvine error won Cal Poly the set and the match 16-14. The Mustangs now get ready for a huge week next week. They have a quick turnaround as they will host conference leader UCSB on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. for a pivotal Halloween matchup inside Mott Athletics Center. They then head over the Pacific Ocean to face second-place Hawai'i on Friday night. As of Saturday night, Cal Poly sits in fourth in the Big West standings but are just one game behind both Long Beach State and Hawai'I and two behind UCSB.
