Mustangs Fall at Home to First Place UCSB Tuesday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Two Mustangs recorded double-doubles but Cal Poly fell at home Tuesday evening to Big West leader UC Santa Barbara 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 25-15).
Redshirt sophomore setter Emme Bullis recorded her fifth double-double of the season after finishing with 28 assists and a career-high 23 digs. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska had 10 kills and 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham also finishd in double figures with 10 kills in addition to nine digs while redshirt sophomore outside hitter Amy Hiatt added nine kills for the Mustangs (15-10, 9-4 BW), who saw their four-match win streak snapped.
The Gauchos (22-3, 12-1 BW) got out to a 7-2 lead in the first set. Cal Poly fought its way back to eventually get it back tied at 11 apiece. Tied at 21, UCSB scored three straight points to hold set point at 24-21. The Mustangs battled with back-to-back points to get within one before UCSB scored to finish off the set 25-23.
The second set was tight throughout. Cal Poly held a one-point lead at 21-20 before the Gauchos scored five straight points to finish the set and win it 25-21.
The Mustangs pulled off an incredible comeback in the third set. Trailing 23-19, Cal Poly scored four straight points to tie it at 23. Tied at 24, an attack error by UCSB followed by a Markovska kill won the set for the Mustangs 26-24.
In the fourth set, the Gauchos got out to a 14-5 lead. They went on to win the set 25-15 and clinch the match victory.
Cal Poly will head to Honolulu on Friday to face Hawai'i at 10 p.m. PT. The match will air live on ESPN+.
