Mustangs Pull Off Another Reverse Sweep; Beat UC Irvine 3-2 Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The cardiac 'Stangs did it again Friday night. For the fourth time this season, and for the second straight match, the Mustangs came back from a 2-0 set deficit to win the final three sets and beat UC Irvine 3-2 16-26, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-8) in front of nearly 2,000 fans at Mott Athletics Center.
Three Mustangs (8-7, 2-1 BW) finished with double digit kills. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska had a double-double, setting a career-high with 19 kills to go along with 13 digs. Redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham had 16 kills and nine digs while redshirt junior middle blocker Kate Slack hit an extremely efficient .588 on her way to 11 kills and three blocks.
Redshirt sophomore setter Emme Bullis set a season-high after dishing out 46 assists while junior libero Jolei Akima led the back row defensively with 22 digs as Cal Poly held the Anteaters (3-11, 1-2 BW) to a .196 hitting percentage or lower each of the final three sets.
After dropping the first two sets 25-16 and 25-22, Cal Poly got things going in the third. After UC Irvine jumped out to a 6-2 lead, the Mustangs responded with seven straight points to take a 9-6 lead. Cal Poly later held a 21-16 lead before the Anteaters went on a 5-1 run to cut the Mustang lead down to one at 22-21. Ahead 23-22, the Mustangs got a kill from redshirt freshman middle blocker Tess Masingale before a UC Irvine attack error finished off the set 25-23 to keep Cal Poly's hopes alive.
Tied at 14 apiece in the fourth, the Mustangs scored five consecutive points to go up 19-14. UC Irvine then went on a 6-2 run to trim the Cal Poly lead down to 21-20 before the Mustangs scored the next four points to win the set 25-20 and force a decisive fifth set.
Cal Poly stormed out to a 10-4 lead to begin the fifth set race to 15. The Mustangs never looked back from there, going up as much as eight before going on to win it 15-8 and complete the reverse sweep victory.
The Mustangs are back in action at Mott Athletics Center Saturday at 2 p.m. against Cal State Fullerton.
