SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly cross country program made a statement at the Bill Dellinger Invitational hosted by Oregon this past Friday, earning them plenty of attention nationally in this week's USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll.
In the Week 2 USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll released Tuesday, the Mustang men were ranked No. 29 and the women received five votes nationally.
This is the first time ever that both the men's and women's teams have received votes in the national poll during the same week.
For the men, this is their time being ranked in the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll in 12 years, while the women last received votes nationally in 2018.
It's the highest national ranking for the Cal Poly men's team since they finished the 2011 season at No. 28. Last year, the men received votes in the USTFCCCA national rankings for the first time since 2013.
The leap into the national spotlight comes as no surprise after an impressive showing by both squads at the prestigious Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Oregon.
The men captured the team title at the meet with 41 points, finishing ahead of the host Ducks (58 points), ranked No. 15 in the country entering the meet, and Portland (164), who was No. 9 at the time. Graduate student Davis Bove led the way, placing first overall with an 8K time of 23:40.1. Will Fallini-Haas shined as well taking home fifth, Aidan McCarthy took 15th, Anthony Guerra secured 17th, Colton Swinth grabbed 21st and Spencer Pickren earned 25th.
The Cal Poly women awed as well, taking home third with 122 points and finishing ahead of Oregon State (148), who entered the invite ranked No. 17. Redshirt junior Schuyler Gooley paced the Mustangs at the meet, placing 16th with a personal-best 6K time of 20:39.7. Hana Catsimanes was close behind in 18th, followed by Tatiana Cornejo in 20th. Carissa Buchholz took 39th, Julia Heckey 41st and Kaia Hoak 58th to round out the top six finishers for the women.
Both teams also moved up in this week's USTFCCCA West Region rankings. The men jumped up one spot to No. 6 ahead of Oregon, while the Mustang women made some significant noise, moving from No. 11 to No. 8.
Cal Poly returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 14, for a pair of meets. The team will send its top men's and women's runners to Charlottesville, Va. to take part in the XC23 Invitational — which will serve as this year's Pre-Nationals meet — while the rest of the Mustangs will race in the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara.
