Cal Poly Cross Country Sweeps Team Titles at Season-Opening Gaucho Twilight

LOMPOC, Calif. — The Cal Poly cross country program opened its 2026 season with a dominant showing at the Gaucho Twilight hosted by UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, sweeping the men’s and women’s team and individual titles at the meet.
The Mustangs battled runners from the Gauchos, Fresno State, Westmont, Cuesta College and Saint Mary’s on the women’s side at Mission Club Golf Course in Lompoc. The women ran a 4K while the men raced a 6K. A total of 24 athletes competed in the meet for the Mustangs, 14 women and 10 men.
Fifth-year Tatiana Cornejo — a two-time USTFCCCA All-West Region honoree — led the way for the Cal Poly women, capturing first with an impressive 4K time of 13:26.7. It was Cornejo’s first cross country meet running attached for the Mustangs since placing 25th at the 2024 West Regional meet. The Elk Grove, Calif. native did not run track outdoors for the Mustangs this past season, but secured Second Team All-American honors in the mile indoors in March.
Talented junior Nikki Bridges brought home a second-place finish in a time of 13:39.5. Junior Melisse Djomby Enyawe crossed the line in third (13:50.8), senior Lianna Guerra grabbed fifth (13:57.3) and junior Ellia Echsner finished sixth (14:08.9). Freshmen Sydney Middleton (14:09.7) and Isabella Ramirez (14:09.8) took seventh and eighth respectively and senior Sydney Sundgren earned 10th (14:14.9) to round out the eight runners that finished inside the top 10 for the Mustangs.
For the second straight year, the Cal Poly women cruised to the title at the meet with 17 team points, finishing 32 points in front of UCSB.
The Mustang men took the course next and laid down an impressive showing of their own, also scoring 17 points and beating out the second-place Gauchos by 33 points.
Cal Poly secured the first four places in the men’s 6K race with senior Dheeraj Gurusamy stepping up to take the individual title, finishing in 18:10.4. Last year, Gurusamy placed second at the meet while running on the 8K course.
Sophomore Miles Cook secured the runner-up position, crossing the line right on Gurusamy’s heels in 18:11.2. Senior Rory Catsimanes was next, placing third in 18:12.6, and true freshman Kyle Jakary had a strong showing with a fourth-place finish (18:15.0). Junior Devin Ibarra earned seventh (18:29.2), sophomore J.R. Lesher eighth (18:29.4), senior Ethan Miller ninth (18:31.5) and freshman Andres Lomeli (18:36.1) to complete the eight runners that placed inside the top 10 for Cal Poly.
It was the second straight year Cal Poly swept the team and individual titles at the meet. The meet marked the Mustangs’ first action under the direction of Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jake Stewart and Head Cross Country Coach Delaney Rasmussen.
Cal Poly returns to action on Friday, Sept. 25, to take part in the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola University Chicago.
