SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Graduate student Davis Bove has been named the Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career after an incredible showing at the Bill Dellinger Invitational.
Bove is the second Mustang to receive Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors this season, joining Spencer Pickren who earned the award on Sept. 5 after winning the men's 6K title at the Big West Preview meet.
Bove showed out in his first race as a Mustang on Friday, taking control of the men's 8K at the Pine Ridge Golf Club in Springfield, Oregon, with over a mile left and never looking back, capturing the individual title with a time of 23:40.1.
Bove's performance allowed Cal Poly to place first as a team and beat out the host Ducks — ranked No. 15 in the nation at the time — and Portland, ranked ninth in the country entering the meet. The showing by the Mustangs allowed the men to earn a national ranking of 29th in this week's USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll — marking the first time since 2011 the team has been ranked.
Bove transferred to Cal Poly this fall after spending four years at LSU. As a Tiger, the Franklin, Tenn. native earned Second Team All-American honors in the indoor mile twice, placing 12th at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships and 15th in 2022. During his time at LSU, Davis also broke school records in the indoor 3,000-meter and mile, was a two-time NCAA East Preliminaries qualifier in the 1,500 (2021, 2023) and anchored the Tigers' school-record breaking indoor distance medley relay in 2023.
Bove, who graduated from LSU magna cum laude this spring with a bachelor's in bioengineering, is also a former USA Triathlon Junior and U23 National Champion.
