Cheng, Keegan Crowned Cal Poly's Queen and King of the Pool

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior Summer Cheng and senior Sean Keegan earned the titles of 'Queen and King of the Pool' for Cal Poly as the Mustang swimming and diving program opened its 2023-24 season Friday with the annual Queen and King of the Pool pentathlon against Cal at the Anderson Aquatic Center.
During the pentathlon, each swimmer competed in five 100-yard races, including the butterfly, breaststroke, individual medley, backstroke and freestyle. The men's and women's swimmer from each school with the best combined time was crowned 'King and Queen of the Pool.' The Mustangs held their own against Cal, a perennial national powerhouse in the pool.
Cheng completed the pentathlon in 5:04.42, allowing her to secure a 15th-place finish overall. The Anchorage, Alaska native took 16th in both the 100 free and 100 IM and narrowly edged out teammate Ella Bettencourt to claim Cal Poly's 'Queen of the Pool.' The true freshman from Visalia finished the pentathlon in 5:05.33, good for 16th overall.
Freshman Amalie Claus-Udarbe came in 19th overall in the women's pentathlon (5:06.09), sophomore Melia Costa 23rd (5:09.34), senior Kelly McDermott 24th (5:10.31) and freshman Olivia Sundgren 25th (5:11.72). Claus-Udarbe was 10th in the women's 100 breast (1:07.63).
Keegan grabbed 'King of the Pool' honors for the Mustangs by placing 13th overall in the men's pentathlon with a time of 4:22.63. Sophomore Finn Schlamp captured 16th (4:23.24), freshman Luke Reyes 20th (4:24.73), sophomore Jonathan Butler 22nd (4:26.35) and sophomore Nick Elliott 23rd (4:26.98).
In the men's 100 breast, sophomore Alex Seybold placed seventh (58.03) and sophomore Alex Power ninth (58.48).
The Mustangs will remain at home to host a pair of opponents this coming week. The Cal Poly women will battle San Diego State in a dual at noon on Friday, Sept. 29, at the Anderson Aquatic Center. Then the following day at 10 a.m., the Mustang women are set to face the Aztecs and Fresno Pacific, while the men take on the Sunbirds in a dual.
