Mustangs Sweep Nicholls State to Finish Weekend

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Three Mustangs recorded double digit kills as the Cal Poly volleyball team hit a season-best .438 hitting percentage to sweep Nicholls State 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-13) Saturday morning to finish the Stephen F. Austin Tournament in dominant fashion.Tommi Stockham led the Mustangs (4-2) offensively with 12 kills to go along with six digs. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska notched her second straight double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken had the best match of her Cal Poly career, finishing with a career-high 11 kills while hitting .450.
Defensively, junior libero Jolei Akima continues to lead the way in the back row for the Mustangs, who had 60 digs a team. She had a match-high 20 digs, marking already the fourth time in the first six matches of the season she has finished with at least 20 digs.
Cal Poly also got six kllls apiece from freshman outside hitter Emma Fredrick as well as redshirt junior middle blocker Kate Slack.
The Mustangs started fast right out of the gate in the to begin the match, getting out to an 8-1 lead in the first set. Cal Poly led by as many as 12 and cruised to a 25-10 win. Markovska had six kills and seven digs in the first set alone as the Mustangs hit .548, their highest hitting percentage in a set so far this season.
Tied 3-3 in the second set, Cal Poly rattled off an 8-1 run to go up 11-4. The Colonels (1-4) came back with six straight points to get back within one. The Mustangs regained the lead after a 6-1 run put them up 17-11. Nicholls State eventually got back within one at 24-23 before a kill by Markovska sealed the set for Cal Poly, 25-23.
The first set was back-and-forth to begin with before, tied at 6, Cal Poly ran away with it after going on a 9-2 run to take a 15-8 lead. The Mustangs continued to build on that lead, going up by as much as 12 before going on to win by that same margin, 25-13 to clinch the sweep.
The Mustangs stay on the road next week, traveling to Harrisonburg, Va. for the Dukes Invitational at James Madison University. There, Cal Poly will face New Hampshire Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 a.m. PT as well as James Madison at 4 p.m. PT. They then wrap up the tournament Saturday with VCU at 1 p.m. PT.
