Cal Poly Tames Tigers on Senior Day for Second Straight Win
9/17/2023 6:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior Georgia Weeks and freshman Annika Smith netted their first career goals and graduate student Whitney Wiley buried her first goal as a Mustang as Cal Poly women's soccer rolled to a 3-1 victory over Pacific on Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
Prior to the match, the Mustangs (3-3-2) honored their six seniors — Brooke Golik, Kate Reedy, Whitney Wiley, Olivia Ortiz, McKenna Carbon and Georgia Weeks. The seniors led the way throughout and helped Cal Poly get off to a roaring start in its final home nonconference match of the season.
Just 1:18 into the match, Wiley struck a ball with her left foot from outside the 18-yard box to the bottom right corner of the Pacific net to put the Mustangs on top early. For Wiley, who transferred to Cal Poly this year after playing four seasons at New Hampshire, it was her first point and goal in Green and Gold, and her 10th collegiate goal overall. Wiley's tally was also the ninth earliest goal scored in program history.
Just over three minutes later, Weeks rang one off the crossbar. Making her first career start on Senior Day, Weeks continued battering the Pacific netminder with shots before earning a penalty kick in the 14th minute thanks to a handball by the Tigers in the box. Weeks then stepped in and buried one to the bottom right corner to earn her first career goal and give Cal Poly a 2-0 advantage.
The Mustangs kept pressing forward after their second goal and the Tigers had no answer. Cal Poly's offensive prowess nearly resulted in another goal before the end of the first half as Smith rang one off the bottom of the crossbar in the 40th minute off a slick pass from sophomore Jessie Halladay.
Cal Poly dominated the first half, outshooting the Tigers 13-3.
The Mustangs struck again in the 63rd minute to gain a commanding 3-0 advantage. Freshman Sophia Moness played a pass to Smith about 30 yards away from goal and Smith did the rest, powering her way through the Pacific backline and chipping one to the back of the net with her right foot for her first career goal. Smith's goal came just three days after tallying her first collegiate point in Thursday's 3-1 victory at UC Santa Barbara.
Pacific (6-3-1) scored in the 74th minute to avoid being shut out.
Cal Poly outshot the Tigers 20-9 in the match, firing seven on frame, and junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made two saves to secure her third victory of the season and improve to 17-11-5 in her Cal Poly career.
Defenders Emma Brown and Siena Urzua, who made her second straight start for the Mustangs, played all 90 minutes on the Cal Poly backline.
The Mustangs hit the road to face Portland at 7 p.m. Saturday in their final nonconference match of the season.
