SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After netting her first career goal in the season opener for Cal Poly women's soccer, sophomore Jessie Halladay has been named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
In the 75th minute of Thursday's match at Fresno State, sophomore Emily Lieber crossed a ball into the box from the right side that took a deflection off a Bulldog defender in front before finding Halladay. The Loyola Marymount transfer didn't hesitate, burying a blast with her right foot to the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
For Halladay, it was her first collegiate goal and point. The Los Gatos, Calif. native transferred to Cal Poly this spring after spending her freshman season at LMU, where she played in all 17 matches.
Halladay's goal proved to be pivotal for the Mustangs as the Bulldogs scored one of their own less than a minute later, resulting in a 1-1 draw between the two teams.
Halladay also scored the lone goal in Cal Poly's annual Green vs. White intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 5, and recorded two assists in the Mustangs' 10-0 exhibition drubbing of Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday.
The Mustangs travel to defending national champion and preseason No. 1 UCLA (1-0-0) on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match. Cal Poly continues its four-match road trip to open the regular season Sunday when the team heads to LMU for a noon match.
