
Summer Leagues: Quartet of Mustangs Have Earned Three Wins

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Charlie Royle, Tanner Sagouspe, Freddy Rodriguez and Evan Tomlinson all have earned three victories on the mound for their summer league teams.
The quartet of pitchers returning to Cal Poly for the 2024 season have combined for a 12-3 win-loss record so far this summer.
Meanwhile, Tate Shimao, Evan Cloyd and Ryan Stafford all are hitting close to the .280 mark as the 2023 collegiate summer league season winds down.
Royal is 3-1 with a 1.68 ERA for the Ridgefield Raptors in the West Coast League. The rising sophomore right-hander also has one save with 27 strikeouts over 26 2/3 innings in seven appearances (five starts) on the mound.
On Saturday, Royal struck out a season-high six batters over six scoreless innings in a 4-2 win over Springfield. He allowed one walk and scattered five hits in the no-decision. On July 20, he tossed three scoreless frames with no walks and four strikeouts in another no-decision, a 2-0 win over Edmonton.
Royal's wins were against Bend, Springfield and Bellingham.
Sagouspe is 3-0 with a 7.36 ERA at Eau Claire in the Northwoods League, striking out 17 batters over 11 innings in six appearances, earning wins over Bismarck, Willmar and Rochester. He struck out six in three innings versus Willmar on July 7.
At the plate, the outfielder is hitting .197 with 14 hits in 20 games, including three doubles, a pair of triples and two home runs with 17 RBIs. Sagouspe produced a double and home run for three RBIs against La Crosse on July 12.
Rodriguez sports a 3-1 mark and 4.05 ERA in seven games (four starts) for Eau Claire. He has struck out 32 batters over 26 2/3 innings with wins against Minnesota, Thunder Bay and Rochester.
In his last four starts, Rodriguez has pitched five or six innings and has recorded six or seven strikeouts in each contest. He has compiled a 2.86 ERA in those four July starts.
Tomlinson is pitching for the Bay Area Admirals and is 3-1 with a 4.58 ERA in six games, notching 21 strikeouts over 17 2/3 innings. He earned a pair of four-inning wins against Solano and Lincoln along with another win over Solano in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Cloyd is hitting .284 for the Portland Pickles in the West Coast League with 11 doubles, four home runs and 24 RBIs. His 10 multiple-hit games includes a 4-for-6 performance against Springfield on June 17 with two doubles and three RBIs. During a six-game hitting streak from July 11-19, Cloyd went 9-for-22 with three doubles, two home runs — both solo shots against Walla Walla on July 13 — and four RBIs.
Shimao owns a .278 average at Corvallis with 22 hits in 23 games, including three doubles and a home run. He has knocked in 13 runs and has produced six multiple-hit games.
Shimao was 3-for-3 with a double and one run scored against Bend on Sunday and homered against Springfield on July 11. He put together a seven-game hitting streak in the second half of July, going 9-for-25 (.360) with a double.
Stafford, who competed for USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team in late June and early July, has played 19 games for Yarmouth-Dennis in the Cape Cod League with a .281 average, one home run and seven RBIs. His six multiple-hit contests include a 3-for-5 day at the plate against Falmouth on June 18 and the catcher has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games, going 15-for-40 during the run (.375) with a home run against Cotuit on July 25.
Other top performers this summer …
• Noah Larkin is 2-0 in 10 games with Waterloo. His wins were against Duluth on June 22 and Eau Claire on July 10 and Larkin has struck out seven batters over 12 innings.
• Holden Garcia has pitched in six games with four starts for Rochester, earning a win against Thunder Bay on July 7 with six strikeouts, two walks and two hits allowed over 5 1/3 innings.
• Alejandro Garza sports a .340 batting average in 20 games at Portland, going 17-for-50 with two doubles and four RBIs. His four multiple-hit contests include a 3-for-4 day, all singles, against Springfield last Thursday.
• Jakob Wright is 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA for Corvallis, notching 17 strikeouts over 18 1/3 innings. He has appeared in five games (four starts) with wins against Springfield on June 28 (five scoreless innings, three hits, three strikeouts) and Kelowna on July 19 (one run, one hit, six strikeouts in five innings).
• Luke Kovach has no decisions but a 1.35 ERA for Corvallis, striking out 18 batters over 13 1/3 innings (nine appearances, one start). He pitched four scoreless innings versus Kamloops on June 11 with one hit and four strikeouts in the no-decision (a 2-0 loss).
• Cam Holland has three doubles among his five total hits for Wenatchee, driving in four runs. He produced two-hit games against Victoria on June 9 and Bellingham on July 25. Holland also has pitched in three games with a 2-0 record, one save and 0.60 ERA. He went six innings in each of his two starts on the mound, striking out nine without allowing a run and scattering six hits versus Victoria on June 11.
• Griffin Naess is 2-1 with a 1.68 ERA in seven games (one start) for Kelowna. Both of his wins were against Edmonton on July 7 (two scoreless innings) and July 14 (three scoreless frames).
