SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Highlighted by 12 home matches, including hosting a non-conference tournament featuring two NCAA Tournament teams from last year, Cal Poly volleyball released its 30-match 2023 schedule Tuesday. Under the leadership of fourth year head coach Caroline Walters, the season, which sees the Mustangs face five teams who made the NCAA Tournament in 2022, kicks off Friday, August 25 in Sacramento at the Sacramento State Invitational against the University of Iowa at 4:30 p.m. Their second match of that tournament will be August 26 at 4:30 p.m. against Nevada before wrapping it up August 27 against Sacramento State at 1:30 p.m. They then will head to Nacogdoches, Texas August 31 through Sept. 2 for a three-day tournament hosted by Stephen F. Austin. Cal Poly will face the host Lumberjacks August 31 at 4 p.m. PT to kick off the tournament. Last season, Stephen F. Austin had a banner year going 26-5 and 14-0 in WAC play to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. They will then take on Southern Miss, who made it to the semifinals of the NIVC Tournament last year, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. PT before finishing it Sept. 2 at 9 a.m. PT against Nicholls State. Their final non-conference road trip will take the Mustangs east to Harrisonburg, Va. for the Dukes Invitational hosted by James Madison University Sept. 8-10. There, they will face New Hampshire, James Madison, and VCU. James Madison made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2022 after finishing 24-5 and 15-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. Cal Poly's home opener will be Thursday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. against Washington, a 2022 NCAA Tournament team, as part of its three-day tournament, the Mustang Invitational, at Mott Athletics Center that features the Huskies, Pepperdine, and Saint Mary's. After playing Washington, the Mustangs will face Saint Mary's Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. They will finish the tournament against Pepperdine, another 2022 NCAA Tournament qualifier, Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m. to conclude non-conference play. It will be the first non-conference tournament the Mustangs will host at Mott Athletics Center since 2019 when they held the Share SLO Mustang Challenge that saw Wichita State, North Texas, and San Jose State in it. The Mustangs faced both Washington and Pepperdine last season in Seattle, falling to both teams who were ranked at the time in five sets. Cal Poly will then start Big West play Sept. 22 on the road at Long Beach State. The first home match of conference play will be on Sept. 29 against UC Irvine at 7 p.m. The Mustangs have finished no lower than third in the Big West standings each of the last seven seasons, including winning the conference in 2017 and 2018. Some of the marquee conference matches include home and away dates against Blue/Green rival UCSB on Oct. 12 (away) and Oct. 31 (home), as well as a home match against three-time defending Big West champion Hawai'i on Oct. 14 followed by a road match against the Rainbow Wahine on Nov. 3. This year's Big West schedule will be different than in prior seasons. Each team will play 18 conference matches as opposed to 20 previously. For the Mustangs, they will face CSUN and CSU Bakersfield only once in 2023. The reason for this is due to the Big West's addition of a six-team postseason tournament to decide who gets the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It will be held at Long Beach State this year the week of Thanksgiving and will rotate host sites in future seasons. Despite losing three players to graduation that were multiple time All-Conference honorees, the Mustangs return eight players that played in at least 45 sets in 2022. That includes three players who earned All-Big West honors last season. Redshirt junior Tommi Stockham leads that group of returners after earning First Team All-Big West nods each of the last two seasons. In 2022, Stockham led the Mustangs and was second in the Big West in kills at 3.79 per set. She posted 10 double-doubles and had three matches of at least 20 kills while being named Big West Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions. Another key returner for Cal Poly is redshirt sophomore setter Emme Bullis, who last season was named Honorable Mention All-Conference and Big West All-Freshman in her first year taking over setting duties. Bullis ranked third in the Big West in assists at 10.05 per set. She had at least 40 assists in 11 matches and recorded 12 double-doubles as she averaged 2.36 digs per set which ranked second on the team. Throughout the season, she was named Big West Setter of the Week four times and Freshman of the Week once. The other returner who earned accolades last year is redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska, who was named to the Big West All-Freshman Team. She averaged 1.77 kills per set with double figure kills in eight times while starting 26 of 30 matches. She was second on the team in aces with 26, fourth in points per set at 2.23, fourth in blocks with 42, and fourth in digs with 236. To view the entire 2023 schedule, click HERE.
