DAVIS, Calif. -- Steven Brooks went a career-long seven innings and matched his career high with seven strikeouts as Cal Poly evened its Big West baseball series against UC Davis at a game apiece with an 8-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
In a game delayed 2 hours, 45 minutes at the start due to rain and lightning, the sophomore right-hander scattered six hits and walked one, surrendering one run in the fourth after his Mustang teammates had already surged to an 8-0 advantage.
Brooks (4-1), a graduate of Cosumnes Oaks High School in Elk Grove, about 30 minutes from UC Davis, earned his fourth straight win since a loss to Hawai'i in mid-March and threw 99 pitches. He notched one strikeout in each of his seven innings on the mound.
With the win, Cal Poly improved to 15-29 for the season, snapping a six-game losing streak, and 9-14 in conference games. UC Davis fell to 16-26 and 6-14.
Cal Poly scored its eight runs in the first four innings and that was more than enough for Brooks and Kaden Sheedy, who tossed two scoreless frames in relief, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Cal Poly scored an unearned run in the first inning as Jake Steels reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Fenn and came home on an RBI double down the left-field line by Ryan Stafford.
The Mustangs broke the game open with three runs in the third and four more in the fourth.
Aaron Casillas doubled down the right-field line to score two and Joe Yorke's sacrifice fly to center field made it 4-0 in the third.
Tate Shimao singled and Tanner Sagouspe walked to open the fourth. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Steels allowed Shimao to score and Fenn's RBI bunt single to first base on a safety squeeze play plated Sagouspe.
Steels scored on a wild pitch and Stafford's sacrifice fly to center field gave Cal Poly its 8-0 lead.
UC Davis scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth on doubles by Jack Gallagher and James Williams.
Cal Poly produced double-digit hits for the 15th time in its last 27 games, led by Steels, Fenn and casillas with two hits apiece.
UC Davis was held to seven hits by Brooks and Sheedy, Williams with a single and double.
The loss was charged to Aggie starter Carter Delaney (0-4) as he allowed six runs (four earned) and seven hits over three-plus innings. The Mustangs scored a pair of unearned runs in the game thanks to three UC Davis errors.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly to send redshirt freshman southpaw Jakob Wright (0-0, 3.86 ERA) to the mound for the fifth straight weekend, facing UC Davis redshirt junior right-hander Kaden Hogan (1-1, 4.62 ERA).
