DAVIS, Calif. -- Kaden Hogan and three relievers combined on a three-hit shutout and catcher Jack Gallagher drove in four runs with a single and home run as UC Davis clinched its Big West Conference baseball series against Cal Poly with an 8-0 shutout Sunday at Dobbins Stadium.
With their second shutout of the series and their first series win against the Mustangs since 2015, the Aggies improved to 17-26 overall and 7-14 in Big West games. Cal Poly fell to 15-30 and 9-15.
In his first start of the year, Hogan (2-1) pitched five scoreless innings for the win, allowing two hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Alejandro Huezo (two innings), Nathan Peng (one inning) and Danny Carrion (one inning) combined to give up one hit and strike out four in four scoreless innings of relief.
Gallagher singled to drive in UC Davis' first two runs of the game in the first inning and hit his 11th home run of the year, a two-run shot to left field, in the eighth to cap the Aggies' outburst.
Leighton Helfrick contributed a three-run double and scored on a passed ball to cap a six-run first-inning UC Davis rally against Cal Poly redshirt freshman southpaw Jakob Wright (0-1).
Lone Mustang highlight was turned in by junior right-hander Ryan Baum, who relieved Wright in the first inning and pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, scattering four hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Cal Poly had just two scoring opportunities in the game.
The Mustangs had runners at second and third with one out in the third inning on a single by Tate Shimao, an error and a balk, but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat, second baseman Alex Gouveia diving to his right to snag Ryan Stafford's grounder.
Cal Poly also had two runners on base in the fifth as Jake Steels was hit by a pitch and Ryan Fenn singled before a fly ball to center field closed out the inning.
Cal Poly's three hits were singles by Shimao in the third, Fenn in the fifth and pinch-hitter Austin Caviness in the ninth.
Cal Poly hosts Fresno State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before heading back out on the road to play Utah next weekend in Salt Lake City.
