UC San Diego Completes Sweep of Big West Series Versus Cal Poly
4/30/2023 5:20:00 PM | Baseball
The freshman from Rocklin, Calif., smashed a two-run home run to right field, his seven of the season and third of the series, one pitch following some chin music, shattering a 5-5 tie and sparking the Tritons to a 7-6 victory over Cal Poly on Sunday before a season-high crowd of 2,347 inside Baggett Stadium.
A day earlier, Larson hit a three-run home run to break a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning of an 8-6 UC San Diego win, He also contributed a two-run home run to extend a 2-1 Triton lead to 4-1 in the third inning of an eventual 5-1 triumph Friday night.
With the win, UC San Diego completed a sweep of its Big West Conference series, improved its record at Baggett Stadium to 6-1 and overall mark to 25-16. The Tritons are 14-7 for fourth place in the Big West.
Cal Poly suffered its fourth loss of the week, falling to 14-27 for the season and 8-13 in conference games. The Mustangs are 7-14 in games decided by one or two runs this year.
Cal Poly erased 1-0 and 5-2 deficits and held the lead once at 2-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning but couldn't produce timely hitting in several other frames, stranding a total of 10 runners on the base paths.
Jake Steels led off the first inning with a double but couldn't get him home, left Taison Corio at third after his RBI triple in the fourth, had runners at second and third with out out in the sixth, left the bases loaded in the seventh after scoring three runs, had a runner at second with two outs in the eighth and three times brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth before two fly balls and a strikeout ended the game.
Aren Alvarez (2-2), who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, earned the win for UC San Diego and Izaak Martinez earned his third save in as many days and fourth of the season despite giving up a leadoff home run to Collin Villegas in the ninth.
Trailing 1-0, Cal Poly scored twice in the fourth on Wyatt King's groundout to shortstop and Corio's triple.
UC San Diego scored a run in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2 and both teams scored three times in the seventh for a 5-5 tie.
An RBI double by Crew Robinson and a two-run-single by Brock Kleszcz gave the Tritons a 5-2 lead and Cal Poly answered with an RBI single by Ryan Fenn and a two-run single by Aaron Casillas to tie the game again.
Casillas had three of Cal Poly's 12 hits while Fenn, Jake Steels and Joe Yorke each each produced two hits. Fenn extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a third-inning single.
Larson, Kleszcz and Doyle Kane all had three of UC San Diego's 14 hits.
Mustang southpaw Jakob Wright tossed two-plus scoreless innings but gave up three hits and four walks. Steven Brooks pitched five innings in relief of Wright, allowing five runs and nine hits with four strikeouts, while Kyle Scott (0-3) suffered the loss, surrendering the two-run home run to Larson in the ninth.
Fenn was 7-for-13 in the series with a double and three RBIs while Casillas contributed six hits and three RBIS and Villegas five hits and four RBIs. Like Larson, Villegas hit a home run in each game of the series, lifting his totals to 12 homers and 31 RBIs for the year.
Cal Poly plays four games on the road next week, visiting Pepperdine on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference contest and UC Davis for a three-game Big West series Friday through Sunday.
