Cal Poly Suffers Another Late-Inning Loss, Falling to Pepperdine 4-3

MALIBU, Calif. -- A two-run double by Ryan Johnson plus an error in the outfield turned a 2-1 Cal Poly lead into a 4-2 Pepperdine advantage in the eighth inning and the Waves went on to beat the Mustangs 4-3 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Cal Poly scored single runs in the first and second innings and held the 2-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh when Pepperdine scored on a bases-loaded hit batsman.
The Waves loaded the bases with one out in the eighth before Johnson cleared the sacks with his double down the left-field line.
Mustang shortstop Aaron Casillas doubled to drive in a run in the ninth, trimming the deficit to 4-3, but Joe Yorke lined out to center field to end the game.
Cal Poly had other opportunities to score, leaving two runners on base in the first, second, third, seven and ninth frames and stranding 12 on the base paths for the game.
With its fifth straight loss, Cal Poly falls to 14-28 for the season. Pepperdine snapped a four-game losing streak, improving to 16-25, and swept the two-game midweek series.
Though Cal Poly was held to six hits, the Mustangs drew 10 walks and one batter was hit by a pitch.
On the other hand, four Mustang pitchers combined to issue nine walks and a pair of hit batsmen while the defense committed three errors, with one of the Pepperdine runs unearned.
Cal Poly's six hits included a run-scoring double by Ryan Stafford in the first inning -- he finished with two hits -- and the RBI double by Casillas in the ninth.
Ryan Fenn drove in the other Mustang run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, but his 15-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-4 at the plate.
Designated hitter Jack Basseer singled twice for Pepperdine while Johnson and center fielder Grant Schoen added doubles.
The loss marked the 13th time this season that Cal Poly lost a lead or a tie was broken in the opponent's final at-bat. The Mustangs are 4-15 when scoring first. Pepperdine was 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position prior to Johnson's eighth-inning double.
In the first start of his sophomore season, southpaw Noah Larkin tossed four scoreless innings, scattering three hits. The loss was charged to Carlo Lopiccolo (0-3) as he gave up all three runs in the eighth inning.
Dylan Stewart (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings in relief for Pepperdine, earning the victory. Gunnar Nichols pitched the ninth for his second save.
