UC San Diego Clinches Big West Series at Cal Poly with 8-6 Victory
4/29/2023 7:57:00 PM | Baseball
Hits were even at 13-13 and Cal Poly scored in six of the nine innings, but all were just a single run as the Mustangs suffered their third straight loss, falling to 14-16 overall and 8-12 in the Big West. UC San Diego improved to 24-16 and 13-7.
Three Mustangs produced three hits apiece -- Ryan Fenn and Collin Villegas each driving in two runs and Aaron Casillas adding one RBI -- but Cal Poly stranded 10 runners on the basepaths.
Trailing 8-5 in the ninth, Cal Poly scored once on Villegas' 11th home run of the year and brought the potential game-tying run to the plate, but Izaak Martinez earned his second save of the series and third of the season by inducing Wyatt King to fly out to second base, ending the game.
Fenn extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single up the middle in the first inning and led off the third frame with a double. His RBI single in the fourth tied the game at 4-4 while his run-scoring groundout in the sixth pulled the Mustangs to within three at 8-5.
In addition to his home run, Villegas singled twice and knocked in a run with a grounder to third base in the first inning. Casillas singled up the middle in the third inning for his RBI and Tate Shimao accounted for Cal Poly's remaining run with a second-inning sacrifice fly.
UC San Diego's 13 hits included three by first baseman Doyle Kane and two each by Patrick Hackworth, Emiliano Gonzalez and Crew Robinson.
Ryan Rissas (2-1), the third of six pitchers sent to the mound for UC San Diego, earned the victory, allowing one run and two hits over 2 2/3 innings. The loss was charged to Mustang starter Ryan Baum (3-4) as he surrendered seven runs and 11 hits in 1/3 innings.
Final game of the series Sunday begin at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly to send redshirt freshman southpaw Jakob Wright (0-0, 5.40 ERA) to the mound for his fourth Sunday start, facing UC San Diego sophomore right-hander Nick Gregson (4-1, 5.53 ERA).
