In the first meeting between the Mustangs and Broncos on April 11, Cal Poly turned its first triple play in 29 seasons of Division I baseball. Santa Clara, however, scored seven times in the first three innings and won going away.
The win was Santa Clara's seventh in eight games, but the Broncos have lost four of six since, losing two of three West Coast Conference contests against BYU and two of three in a non-conference series at Washington State.
The Broncos are 19-15 for the season and 7-8 for sixth place in the WCC.
Santa Clara had runners at first and second with nobody out in the fourth inning and both were running when Efrain Manzo hit a line drive right at Cal Poly shortstop Aaron Casillas. His throw to second baseman Tate Shimao and the succeeding throw to first baseman Joe Yorke easily resulted in the second and third outs for the triple play.
Cal Poly has hit into a pair of triple plays in its Division I era, against Stanford in 2003 and Pepperdine in 2010, but this was the first that the Mustangs turned since moving to Division I in 1995.
Mustang shortstop Aaron Casillas stretched his hitting streak to 10 games with two singles against Santa Clara. The streak reached 17 games on Sunday with an RBI single in the ninth inning as Cal Poly salvaged one win in its Big West series at CSUN, 4-2.
Casillas is 29-for-75 (.387) during his hitting streak, lifting his batting average 72 points to .325. The transfer from CSU Bakersfield is one of several Mustangs swinging hot bats in recent weeks.
Third baseman Ryan Fenn has an 11-game hitting streak, going 19-for-43 (.442), and his power surge actually began back in mid-March as the Cuesta College transfer is 29-for-76 (.382) in his last 20 games to bump his average up 151 points to .343.
Catcher Ryan Stafford, who hit his fourth home run of the season Sunday at CSUN and added a single, scored twice and drove in another Mustang run on a double play grounder, has produced multiple hits in 10 of his last 12 games. Stafford is 40-for-107 (.374) in his last 25 games to hike his average 75 points to .342.
Center fielder Jake Steels is 13-for-35 (.371) in his last eight games as his average has risen 23 points to .317 while first baseman Joe Yorke is 24-for-71 (.338) over his last 16 games, including a pair of four-hit contests, to bring his average up 32 points to .307.
Left fielder Collin Villegas, whose ninth home run of the season, a solo blast leading off the seventh inning, snapped a 2-2 tie at CSUN on Sunday, is 26-for-82 (.317) over his last 20 games, his average going up 43 points to .285. Villegas has 12 doubles in his last 20 games after going 17 games without a two-bagger to start the season.
Santa Clara's top hitters are catcher Johnny Luetzow with a .340 mark, first baseman Robert Hipwell (.333), designated hitter Efrain Manzo (.321) and left fielder JonJon Berring (.310). Hipwell has 10 doubles, 12 home runs and 32 RBIs while Manzo has contributed 12 doubles, 11 homers and 31 RBIs, both in 34 games.
The Broncos are hitting .284 as a team with 64 doubles, 11 triples and 41 home runs in 34 games, stealing 43 of 63 bases, while the pitching staff has compiled a 4.47 staff ERA with 297 strikeouts in 304 innings. The Broncos have committed 39 errors for a .969 fielding percentage.
Cal Poly will start junior right-hander Kaden Sheedy (1-2, 5.08 ERA) on the mound. Santa Clara has not announced its starter.
Cal Poly, which has won 11 of 21 games since a 3-13 start, has compiled a .309 team batting average in its last 20 games, elevating its batting average 33 points to .282 with 41 doubles, 17 home runs and 11 contests with double-digit hits. The Mustangs are averaging 6.8 runs and 11 hits per game during the spurt.
After Tuesday's game, the Mustangs return home to host UC San Diego for a three-game Big West series this weekend at Baggett Stadium. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 o'clock Sunday.
