VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Collin Villegas snapped a 2-2 tie with his ninth home run of the year and four Cal Poly relievers tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings as the Mustangs salvaged a win in the final game of its Big West baseball series at CSUN with a 4-2 triumph Sunday afternoon at Matador Field.
Shortstop Aaron Casillas, who snared a line drive to end a Matador scoring threat in the eighth inning, singled home an insurance run in the ninth to stretch his hitting streak to 17 games as Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs rallied from an early 2-0 deficit for the victory.
Cal Poly improved to 14-23 overall and 8-10 in conference games while second-place CSUN, which lost at home for only the third time in 17 games this season, fell 3.5 games behind first-place Cal State Fullerton in the Big West with marks of 23-11 and 10-5.
Cal Poly scored single runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth frames to turn the 2-0 deficit around
Ryan Stafford hit his fourth home run of the year with one out in the third inning and Jake Steels scored on Stafford's double-play grounder in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.
Villegas' no-doubt blast to left field leading off the seventh snapped the deadlock. Stafford led off the ninth with a single, stole second with two outs and came home on the single by Casillas through the hole on the left side of the CSUN infield.
Redshirt freshman southpaw Jakob Wright pitched 2 1/3 innings in his third collegiate start, allowing two runs (one earned) and three hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Ryan Baum (3-3) relieved Wright with one out in the third and retired 11 of the 15 batters he faced for the victory, giving up two hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Evan Tomlinson, Carlo Lopiccolo and Tanner Sagouspe each pitched one scoreless inning to close out the win, Sagouspe earning his first save as a Mustang with a 1-2-3 ninth -- one fly ball to each of the three outfield positions.
The loss went to Isaac Ontiveros (2-1), who surrendered the tying and go-ahead runs to the Mustangs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Stafford and Ryan Fenn each collected two of Cal Poly's nine hits, Fenn extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Fenn is 20-for-44 (.454) during the streak and 30-for-76 (.395) in his last 20 games, lifting his average 151 points to .343.
CSUN's eight hits included two singles by Kevin Fitzer. Joey Kramer doubled in one run and Ali Camarillo's safety squeeze bunt knocked in the other Matador run.
Stafford was 6-for-13 with three RBIs in the series, Fenn 6-for-14 and Joe Yorke 5-for-13 with three RBIs as Cal Poly hit .333 in the three games.
Cal Poly visits Santa Clara for a 4 p.m. non-conference game Tuesday before returning home to host UC San Diego for a three-game Big West series Friday through Sunday inside Baggett Stadium.
