SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's No. 3 pairing of senior Delaney Peranich and graduate Brooke Golik continue to play stellar beach volleyball. They won both of their matches Saturday to extend their win streak to six straight. Cal Poly beach volleyball fell however in both of its final two matches of the Center of Effort Challenge at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex; 4-1 to No. 3 UCLA and 3-2 to No. 11 Long Beach State.
Golik and Peranich picked up a pair of three set wins over No. 3 pairs from No. 3 UCLA and No. 11 Long Beach State to push their record together this year to a team-leading 16-8 with their last four wins all coming against pairs from ranked teams.
The Mustangs (11-23) started off the day against the No. 3 Bruins, who went on to win the Center of Effort Challenge after beating USC in the championship match 3-2 to finish the weekend 4-0. Cal Poly battled, but was beat at the No. 4, 1, 5, and 2 spots in straight sets by UCLA.
Peranich and Golik took the first set from the Bruins' Sophie Moore and Tessa Van Winkle 21-18. Moore and Van Winkle then won the second set 23-21 to force a deciding third. After a back-and-forth battle that went into extra points, it was Peranich and Golik pulling out a 20-18 victory.
By virtue of results in pool play, Cal Poly met No. 11 Long Beach State a few hours later in the seventh place match which proved to be another tight one with the Beach. LBSU's No. 5 and No. 2 pairs were the first two pairs to win and give the Beach a 2-0 lead in the dual.
Cal Poly's comeback started with the No. 4 pair of senior Kalee Graff and freshman Emma Zuffelato. They beat LBSU's Maggie Walters and Christine Deroos 21-16, 21-19 to put the Mustangs on the board.
Peranich and Golik then tied up the dual after winning their match in three sets over Megan Widener and Natalie Glenn 21-19, 19-21, 15-12.
It ended up coming down to a third set at the No. 1 spot between the Mustangs' Jayelin Lombard and Piper Naess and Long Beach's Sydney Stevens and Julia Westby. After LBSU took the first set 21-19, Lombard and Naess won the second 21-16 to force the third. It was a tight, back-and-forth fight in the third but Long Beach State ultimately winning out 15-12 to clinch the 3-2 dual victory.
Saturday concluded the regular season for Cal Poly. They will now prepare for next week's Big West Championships which will take place April 21 & 22 at Queen's Beach in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The Mustangs will be seeking to win their fourth straight conference title and earn a trip to Gulf Shores for the NCAA Championships.
