Travis Weston earned his first win of 2023 Saturday as Cal Poly defeated No. 18 Oregon State 4-2 in the opener of a doubleheader at Baggett Stadium.

Cal Poly, No. 18 Oregon State Split Saturday Doubleheader

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Tate Shimao doubled to drive in two runs, snapping a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, and Cal Poly went on to defeat No. 18 Oregon State 4-2 in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday inside Baggett Stadium.
Oregon State bounced back to win the nightcap 3-1 as Jaren Turner, within one out of a five-hit shutout, combined with Ryan Brown on a five-hitter and Gavin Turley drove in two with a third-inning single to center field.
Travis Weston (1-1) pitched six innings in the opener for the win, allowing two runs and nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Derek True struck out two in two scoreless innings and Kyle Scott earned his first save with one scoreless, hitless frame.
The loss went to Jacob Kmatz (1-1) as he gave up four runs and six hits over six innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. After Ruben Cedillo's sacrifice fly in the top of the first, Collin Villegas belted his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the frame for Cal Poly.
Shimao's double broke the 1-1 tie in the fourth and, after Oregon State trimmed the deficit to 3-2 on Wilson Weber's RBI single in the top of the sixth, Cal Poly added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on Evan Cloyd's double down the right-field line.
Oregon State outhit Cal Poly 9-6, led by Micah McDowell with three singles and Mason Guerra with a single and home run. Six different Cal Poly batters produced a hit.
In the nightcap, Turner allowed one run and five hits over 8 2/3 innings with no walks and five strikeouts. The junior right-hander was one out away from a shutout before giving up an RBI single to Tanner Sagouspe. With two Mustangs on base, Brown secured the final out with a strikeout.
The loss was charged to Mustang starter Ryan Baum (1-2) as he allowed two runs and five hits in three innings of work. Steven Brooks tossed six solid innings in relief, giving up one run and two hits with four walks and six strikeouts.
Oregon State (9-2) collected seven hits, including a pair of doubles by Kyle Dernedde. Cal Poly's five hits included a single and double by Aaron Casillas.
Cal Poly, in the midst of a 15-game home stand, plays four more games inside Baggett Stadium next week, hosting Xavier of Ohio on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and UNLV for a three-game weekend series Friday through Sunday.
