FRESNO, Calif. — Freshman Rory Devaney (pictured above) shattered a 62-year-old school record and freshman Baxter Kitteringham impressed in his collegiate debut as Cal Poly track and field opened competition at the West Coast Relays on Thursday at Warmerdam Field.
The men's and women's hammer throw and javelin were held Thursday to kick off the historic meet hosted by Fresno State, and the Mustang throwers showed out.
Devaney won the men's hammer throw, recording a lifetime best of 202 feet, 4 inches on his fifth attempt. The mark eclipsed Tom Pagani's school record of 200-5, which was posted in 1961. The 2022 San Luis Obispo High grad improved upon his previous personal best by over 25 feet to obliterate the Cal Poly record in the event.
In the men's javelin, Kitteringham led the way, finishing second with a mark of 199 feet, 8 inches in his first collegiate meet. Kitteringham, who moved to California from Woolooware, Australia just over a week ago and officially joined the team a few days ago, shined for the Mustangs. Kevin Schmitt (192-10) and Nick Gammal (188-4) also posted personal bests in the javelin to finish third and fifth respectively.
Devon Cetti earned fifth in the men's hammer throw (181-10).
The Mustangs will take part in the rest of the events at the West Coast Relays on Friday, with action starting at 10 a.m. from Veterans Memorial Stadium. Cal Poly's top distance runners are competing in the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic on Friday and Saturday.
