Mustangs Come Up Short Against UC San Diego in Final Home Game

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore guard Sydney Bourland recorded a double-double, leading the Mustangs in points and rebounds, but Cal Poly fell to UC San Diego in its final home game of the season Thursday, 60-43.
Bourland finished with team-highs of 11 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. Senior guard Maddie Willett added eight points while junior guard Taylor Wu scored seven points for the Mustangs (9-17, 6-12 BW), who with the loss will be unable to climb into sixth place in the Big West standings and will now play Tuesday in the first round of next week's Big West Championships.
The Tritons (13-16, 10-9 BW) had three players score in double figures, led by guard Emily Cangelosi's 17 points and eight rebounds. UC San Diego, who led the entire game, finished shooting 48 percent from the field while limiting Cal Poly to 26 percent shooting for the game.
The Mustangs struggled to score in the opening quarter, trailing 12-4 heading into the second. Cal Poly cut the lead down to five with 3:40 left in the second quarter before the Tritons finished the half scoring six straight points to go ahead by 11 at the half.
UCSD opened the second half with four unanswered points to go up by 15. Down 39-24 with just over three minutes left in the third, Cal Poly went on a 5-0 run to get back within 10.
The Mustangs were within striking distance of the Tritons in the fourth until a 10-0 run by UCSD put them ahead 21 with six minutes left.
Cal Poly will now look to finish the regular season on a high note Saturday on the road against UC Riverside. Tip time is set for 6 p.m.
