Mustangs Finish Regular Season with Road Win Over UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Behind one of their best offensive performances as a team this season with four players scoring in double figures, the Cal Poly women's basketball team ended the regular season with a 63-50 road win over UC Riverside Saturday night.Jazzy Anousinh led the Mustangs (10-17, 7-12 BW) with a career-high 16 points in addition to three assists. Junior forward Natalia Ackerman also had a career night, recording a double-double and nearly a triple-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds, and a career-high seven blocks, two shy of tying the program record.
Sophomore guard Sydney Bourland also poured in 14 points on 60 percent shooting. Junior guard Taylor Wu added 12 points on 5-7 shooting and dished out four assists.
As a team, Cal Poly shot a season-high 55 percent from the field and had a season-high nine blocks. They also had 16 assists as a team while limiting the Highlanders to 35 percent shooting for the game.
The Mustangs, who shot 61 percent in the first quarter, made six of their first nine shots, getting out to a 13-5 lead. The Highlanders then went on a 6-0 run over the next three minutes to get back within two.
With Cal Poly leading by three heading into the second, the first six minutes of the second quarter were back-and-forth with both teams shooting over 40 percent. After Cal Poly took a 28-25 lead with 3:44 left in the half, UC Riverside held the Mustangs scoreless for the next three and a half minutes as they took a 29-28 lead. A Taylor Wu floater to end the half gave the Mustangs the lead back at halftime, 30-29.
After UC Riverside took a 34-32 with six minutes left in the third, Cal Poly went into domination mode with a 13-0 run that put the Mustangs ahead by 11 and headed into the fourth quarter leading by eight.
Cal Poly opened the fourth with a 11-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 17. The Mustangs continued to hold the Highlanders to just two points through the first six minutes of the quarter as they cruised the rest of the way to the 13 point victory.
The win pushes the Mustangs' total to 10 for the season, more than triple what they had last year. They will head into next week's Big West Championships as the No. 7 seed and sets up another meeting with the No. 10 seed UC Riverside at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nev.
