In the Big West Conference baseball opener for both teams, the Mustangs (3-12, 0-1 Big West) and Rainbow Warriors (8-7, 1-0 Big West) combined for 12 hits in regulation but stranded 17 runners on the basepaths.
In the 10th, Jared Quandt drew a two-out walk and Jacob Igawa's fly ball to right field was dropped for an error, allowing Quandt to score from first base.
Ryan Stafford drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the 10th and stole second, but Connor Harrison struck out the next two Mustang batters to end the game and earn his third save.
Cal Poly and Hawai'i both wasted opportunities to score earlier in the game.
The Mustangs loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning, but a groundout ended the threat.
The Rainbow Warriors had a runner thrown out at the plate in the second inning and another runner thrown out at third in the fourth inning, both throws initiated by Mustang left fielder Collin Villegas.
Hawai'i also had a runner at third with nobody out in the fifth before Bryce Warrecker notched three of his six strikeouts to get out of the jam, and the Rainbow Warriors loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth on three walks but a groundout stopped that uprising.
Warrecker lowered his ERA to 2.83 with seven shutout innings, scattering five hits and walking two in the no-decision. Derek True (0-3) suffered the loss though he did not give up an earned run in 2 2/3 innings.
Alex Giroux (3-0), who relieved starter Harry Gustin in the sixth inning, picked up the victory with 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Gustin tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts in his no-decision.
Cal Poly's seven hits included two singles each by Jake Steels and Joe Yorke. Hawai'i's five hits included a double by Dallas Duarte.
The Mustangs were shut out for the first time since April 9, 2021, when Long Beach State earned a 7-0 win at Blair Field. Last time Cal Poly was shut out at home was on March 2, 2018, a 4-0 Pacific victory.
Due to a wet weather forecast for Sunday, the two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 o'clock. Steven Brooks and Travis Weston will start on the mound for Cal Poly.
