SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program released its 2023 outdoor schedule Thursday, which features three home meets and the inaugural Mark Conover Classic.
The complete schedule can be found here.
For the second consecutive year, the Mustangs will open the outdoor season at home when they host the Cal Poly Open on Friday, March 3, at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.
The following week, the team travels to rival UC Santa Barbara for a three-day invitational (March 8-10).
On March 24-25, Cal Poly will host the inaugural Mark Conover Classic. The meet is named after coach Conover, who served as Cal Poly's Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for more than 13 years before passing away this past April after a courageous year-long battle with a form of skin cancer.
Ryan Vanhoy, who is in his first year as the Mustangs' Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, said Conover's legacy at Cal Poly will live on forever and the program is proud to name the meet in his honor.
"We are excited to rename the Cal Poly Invitational as the Mark Conover Classic, honoring a true cornerstone of our track and cross country program from 1996-2022," Vanhoy said. "The meet will feature a Friday night distance carnival under the lights, showcasing events from the 800 to 5,000-meter. We hope to grow this meet annually so we can continue to honor Mark's legacy and influence on this program for years to come."
The Mustangs will send athletes to the prestigious Mike Fanelli Track Classic hosted by San Francisco State on March 30-April 1, the West Coast Relays in Clovis on March 31 and the Stanford Invitational on March 31-April 1. Two weeks after that, Cal Poly will split the squad between three different meets — the Mt. SAC Relays (April 12-15), the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 13-15) and Beach Invitational (April 14-15).
Cal Poly wraps up its 2023 home schedule at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex on Friday, April 21, with the Mustang Invite. A trip to the Fresno State Invitational on April 29 marks the Mustangs' final meet before entering postseason competition.
Cal State Fullerton is hosting this year's conference championships and the Big West Multi-Event Championships are up first on Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6. At last year's multi-event meet, Cal Poly put on quite the show as two Mustangs earned All-Big West honors (Adelae Fredeen, Dylan Bouzigues) and three others — who are all back this spring — scored team points: Maya Holman, Shimona Draper and Nick Gammal.
The rest of the 2023 Big West Championships will be contested on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13. At the 2022 conference meet, the Cal Poly men captured fourth and the women placed fifth, while three Mustangs captured Big West individual titles — Aidan McCarthy (800-meter), Mathis Bresko (pole vault) and Melissa Navarro (javelin) — and a total of 15 athletes and one relay brought home podium finishes.
Sacramento State is set to host the NCAA West Preliminaries on May 24-27. Last year, seven Mustangs qualified for the meet.
The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held June 7-10 in Austin, Texas.
