Mustangs Surge Late but Come up Short Saturday Against UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – After a tough first half saw the Mustangs down 28, Cal Poly continued to scratch and claw its way in the second half, finishing the game on a 9-0 run, but ultimately fell on the road to UC Davis Saturday, 70-56.
Three Mustangs scored in double figures, led by junior forward Natalia Ackerman's seaon-high 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Junior guard Taylor Wu knocked down four threes to finish with 12 points while sophomore guard Annika Shah added 10 points and three assists.
The Aggies (14-13, 10-7 BW), who never trailed in the game, got off to a hot start in the first quarter, shooting 50 percent. The Mustangs (9-16, 6-11 BW) scored five straight points to tie it 7-7 before UC Davis finished the quarter on a 14-0 run to take a 21-7 lead.
Cal Poly got back within nine after opening the second quarter on a 7-2 run to make it 23-14. UC Davis then caught fire from three, knocking down five of them as they finished the half on a 20-1 run to take a 43-15 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs got back on track in the third, shooting 4-6 from three to cut the UC Davis lead down to 22 heading into the fourth. As they've done all season, Cal Poly continued to battle down the stretch, finishing the game on a 9-0 run the final 90 seconds to cut the Aggie lead down to 14 before the final buzzer expired.
The Mustangs head into the final week of the regular season next week with two games left before the Big West Championships. Cal Poly will host UC San Diego Thursday for the final home game of the season before finishing up at UC Riverside Saturday.
