SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Trevor Tinker has done it again.
For the third time this season, Tinker lifted Cal Poly's wrestling team to a victory in the final match. His fall over Peter Ming in the 285-pound weight class capped the Mustangs' rally from a 15-6 decision in an 18-15 dual meet victory over Stanford on Friday night.
Cal Poly's first win over the Cardinal in 13 years raised the Mustangs' overall record to 7-6 and a spotless 4-0 Pac-12 mark. Cal Poly clinched at least a tie for the conference dual meet title with Friday's win.
"Our message tonight was, 'no matter what,' " said seventh-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas. "Regardless of the outcome, we are going to learn from this opportunity and grow, no matter what. Whatever happens tonight, it doesn't change the way we feel about our guys, no matter what.
"We are incredibly proud of our group because they all did their job and wrestled hard for seven minutes," Sioredas added. "That's all we will ever ask for."
Cal Poly lost the opening bout before Ethan Rotondo and Lawrence Saenz earned decisions for a 6-3 Mustang advantage. Rotondo posted an 8-2 upset over 26th-ranked Jackson DiSario at 133 pounds and Saenz needed just seven seconds in the first overtime period to score a takedown and edge Jason Miranda 5-3 at 141.
Stanford won the next four bouts for a 15-6 cushion.

Mustang 184-pounder Jarad Priest ignited the Mustang comeback with a 9-4 decision over Brook Byers, tallying four takedowns and an escape.
At 197, Bernie Truax returned to the lineup for the first time since Jan. 6 and improved to 10-1 with a 9-5 win over No. 31 Nick Stemmet. Like Priest, the fifth-ranked Truax notched a pair of takedowns in the first period, then earned an escape, takedown and two-point near fall in the second period.
Tinker stepped onto the mat with a 12-7 record, knowing that a decision would tie the dual meet. Each team would have had five decisions but Cal Poly had a 31-29 advantage in points scored leading into the heavyweight bout, so a decision by Tinker would give the Mustangs the dual meet victory.
Tinker scored a quick takedown and Ming quickly escaped. Tinker earned another takedown before pinning Ming in 58 seconds, sending the crowd of 1,328 into a frenzy with his seventh fall of the season.
Earlier this season, Tinker recorded a fall in the final bout to clinch Cal Poly's 23-15 win over Lock Haven and his 10-2 major decision gave the Mustangs a 19-18 triumph at No. 8 Arizona State.
Cal Poly last beat Stanford on Jan. 22, 2010, a 28-11 verdict.
Cal Poly seeks the outright Pac-12 dual meet championship Sunday against Oregon State at 1 o'clock in Mott Athletics Center.
