ST. GEORGE, Utah — Freshman Drew Huston captured fifth in the 100-yard backstroke and junior Ryan Trichler (pictured above) secured a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley for Cal Poly swimming and diving during the third day of the MPSF Championships on Friday.
"Amazing performances by so many," head coach Phil Yoshida said about the third day of competition. "We gave ourselves the opportunity to maximize our points with good morning swims and did a good job of racing at night. With one day left, there are still many opportunities for people to step up and score."
Huston and Trichler both posted top five marks in school history during prelims at Utah Tech's Human Performance Center, and added to those times in the finals. Huston swam a time of 48.30 seconds in the 100 back — third fastest in school history — to take home fifth. Meanwhile, Trichler posted a time of 3:52.61 in the 400 IM, good for fourth best all-time.
Across the board, Cal Poly had a stellar day in the pool at the conference championships as 21 Mustangs qualified for finals in their respective events.
Junior Kelly McDermott earned the top individual finish on the day for the Cal Poly women, grabbing eighth in the 400 IM. In the prelims of the 100 breaststroke, freshman Melia Costa swam the fourth-fastest time in program history (1:04.27). She placed 20th in the finals.
Junior Sean Keegan and freshmen Alex Seybold and Cole Groom finished ninth, 14th and 16th overall in the men's 400 IM. Seniors Ryan Iannaccone and Brian Wong grabbed 13th and 20th respectively in the 100 butterfly, while Jonathan Butler earned 14th in the 100 back.
Senior Kaia Anderson took home 13th in the women's 400 IM, while freshman Courtney Cross had a strong swim in the 200 freestyle to place 15th. Senior Sophie Jackson also secured 20th in the 100 fly.
On the diving board, senior Jacqui Samaniego just missed out on qualifying for the finals in the women's 1-meter dive, but captured the top spot in the consolation finals.
Currently, the Cal Poly men and women are both in eighth place.
Action on the final day of the MPSF Championships on Saturday begins at 9 a.m. in the pool and 11 a.m. in the pool. Finals in the swim portion of the meet start at 5 p.m.
